How has DD caught a cold at nursery?

Anyone else with a toddler at nursery had them catch anything (cold, tummy bug) yet? I know that the lockdown didn't get rid of all diseases forever, but just expected it to be a bit longer than 4 weeks before she picked something up ☹️

We have been very careful since she started nursery, so the cold definitely came from there. It's got me worried that maybe other parents at the nursery are not being as careful as us.

Whilst the risks to children from Covid are low, if DD picks up normal childhood viruses at nursery as children normally do, this will play havoc with work as we will need to isolate every time she has a temperature.

My child did just three two hour sessions at playgroup before the end of term. She finished on the Wednesday... on the Friday she had a fever, sore throat and cold. Marvellous we thought. COVID.

Got tested same day, negative. Just a normal cold. Went through the rest of us that week we were all mildly ill for two days then fine.

She definitely picked it up there, she'd been nowhere else. In six hours over 3 weeks in fact likely that she got it on the last Wednesday so probably in two hours.

Kids get colds, frequently and easily! Autumn term is going to be fun, isn't it!! Confused

Not sure what you mean by being careful. Kids catch colds. How would you prevent that?
And taking time off for a cold and/or teething? You’re going to need a lot of time off!

@TotorosFurryBehind

I know kids normally pick up germs at nursery, but these are not normal times. There are so many hygiene measures in place now and limited mixing of households that I expected the circulation of normal childhood viruses to be much less.
That’s a very naive attitude. Sorry, but viruses and germs are airborne too, I’m surprised it took as long as 4 weeks for your wee one to catch anything.

Jesus Christ you do realise the world isn't totally sterile 🙄

It will, yes. The impact on schools will be huge, too. Every time a teacher or someone in their household has a temperature, they will not be at work, so the class may well have to close if they can’t find a supply teacher willing to replace them.

Ninkanink · 05/08/2020 12:53

Uhm...

She’ll be picking up colds/coughs/tummy bugs/all sorts of things for the next few years at least. It’s what children do; it’s how their immune system becomes strong and viable. It won’t be affected by things like Covid 19, nor will being careful eliminate all or even most virus transmission between children.

Yellowfeather · 05/08/2020 12:54

There might be fewer stomach bugs around this year because of extra hand washing and cleaning, but unless every child, member of staff and parent is wearing a hazmat suit, normal cold and flu bugs will be floating around as usual.

missyB1 · 05/08/2020 12:55

Kids are still developing their immune systems, it’s actually important that the do come into contact with some viruses to help strengthen their immune systems.

Hiddennameforever · 05/08/2020 13:43

I worry how this will play up in schools too.
My daughter is 9 yrs and is off since March.
Now the school sent us letter that if anyone develops a cough, they will be send home as assumed it’s Covid, the whole family has to isolate and get tested.
Kids usually have all sorts of cough, some have allergies, some have colds. My child had a annoying cough for the whole school year as she got stressed from a new teacher shouting on her, hence she developed cought..
How all this will be work up I?
That mean that kids always will be not in class as the school assumes that anyone with slight cough has Covid.

TheOrigBrave · 05/08/2020 13:45

We have been very careful since she started nursery, so the cold definitely came from there.

I disagree, you cannot be sure she didn't catch it from home, unless you live in a sterile environment.

YABU

Lindy2 · 05/08/2020 14:09

My DD managed to get some kind of tummy bug in the middle of lockdown when she wasn't in contact with anyone outside of our household. We'd been on a few socially distanced walks but used sanitiser regularly after touching anything. She still managed to pick up a bug though.

I also managed a 24 hour virus of some kind (not Coronavirus as I got tested and confirmed as negative). I'd also had very little contact with anyone.

I'm assuming there are simply some airborne bugs out there that social distancing won't stop no matter how careful you are.

TotorosFurryBehind · 05/08/2020 23:03

So the nursery has sent out a communication to parents about the cold in DDs bubble, they have taken it seriously and confirmed it is limited to the bubble and that it is the first outbreak of illness since they reopened.

I don't actually believe that many of the posters who have responded have a child in nursery at present...and as for the person who said IABU, this is chat not AIBU 😆 Thanks to the handful of sincere posters who engaged meaningfully with my post. What happened to Mumsnet being a place where anxious first time mums can seek reassurance and advice about motherhood...I see it less and less on here

I responded. I have a child in nursery. I have another child starting nursery next week. You were explained how irrational you were being. There is nothing unsupportive about that. This isn’t an echo chamber OP of aww hunny types. That’s netmums :)

Fatted · 06/08/2020 00:01

You've answered your own question OP.

You're DC isn't in contact with practically anyone else. Everything is being super steralised. So your DC has had absolutely no exposure to any kind of germs to build up any form of resistance or immune system. This is why young babies and children get sick so much! Just being around different people could cause her to have a cold.

We are going to have a generation of germaphobes at this rate.
