Does anything work on fleas anymore?

Our flea treatment for our cats has stopped working apparently - what works these days?

We used to use whatever that prescription flea and worm one is (can’t remember the name now!) then that stopped working. I bought a few different ones and Effipro has been working fine for over a year. Now the fuckers are back.

We aren’t registered with a vet at the moment - we had a great one who came to the house but she’s recently moved away so we need to sign up somewhere. If there’s anything I can order online today without a prescription that would be ideal.

Advantage should work alongside Indorex for the house.

MistyIsland · 05/08/2020 07:54

Advantage and advocate (not sure how it’s spelt) and indorex spray.

This seems to work for us.

VeggieSausageRoll · 05/08/2020 07:55

Effipro isn't great. It's fipronil based and there is some resistance to it.

Use a prescription flea control (or advantage) and the most important thing is to adequately treat the house. That's where you'll be getting them from. Use indorex, staykill, acclaim or RIP flea. Treat the whole house (as well as the cats monthly), upstairs and downstairs, under furniture etc. and then vacuum vigorously daily for 2-3 weeks. Those 4 household sprays aren't the cheapest, but they work and give 12m protection in the environment.

Bravecto

SinkGirl · 05/08/2020 08:44

Thanks all - I know Effipro is fipronil based but weirdly it has worked really well for us even when other fipronil spot Ons haven’t.

We are using Indorex and vacuuming every day. I’ll get some advantage and hopefully that will do the trick :)

Will look at Bravecto as well thanks :)

Bravecto is POM so you would need to see a vet.

CrotchetyQuaver · 05/08/2020 08:52

get yourself registered with a vet and shell out on whatever they recommend, it'll work out cheaper in the long run!

SinkGirl · 05/08/2020 09:14

Thanks all. I can’t get them to a vet at the moment (disabled twins, two cats that detest carriers and DH has broken his wrist so can’t drive or take care of the twins on his own) - this is why we were so happy to find a vet who comes to the house once the twins were born. Really gutted she’s gone! Have ordered some Advantage this morning to tide us over and will get set up with a vet as soon as DH can drive again. Hopefully it will work well enough for now but if not I will have to figure something out!

Even treating the house and cats properly, they won't go overnight, it takes 2-4 weeks to get rid completely

PercyKirke · 05/08/2020 22:24

We used Frontline on our moggies.

Bearnecessity · 05/08/2020 22:58

Beahar ....fipronil once a month
Is working for us when Frontline stopped weirdly. Also occasional spray of indorex as other posters have said.

EloiseTheFirst · 05/08/2020 23:01

Stronghold works well along with Indorex.

It takes a while to get on top of it due to the flea lifecycle but keep going with it. You'll get there in the end.

Itstheprinciple · 06/08/2020 07:59

Advantage, Indorex, vacuuming daily, washing anything that can be washed on a hot wash, bedding etc.

SinkGirl · 06/08/2020 12:08

Sorry I know it will take time, but we had been treating monthly with the spot on and obviously it has stopped working. Advantage is due today so will keep treating, spraying etc :)
