Splashed a pedestrian, he damaged my car

Driving home this evening. A car ahead of me went through what I thought was surface water, I then realised it was a puddle. I slowed as much as I could without the car behind me ploughing into me and swerved as much as I could without swerving in to oncoming traffic but I still splashed the pedestrians walking by. I cringed as I did it.
There was then an almighty bang and I assumed that something had fallen off my car, the nearest place to check was by going right back round the roundabout and in to a car park near the puddle. As I drove back that way the man I splashed started screaming at me. I pulled in and opened my window, he started hurling abuse.

Turns out he threw the battery pack from a drill at my car in rage because I splashed him. I apologised for splashing him, explained that I hadn't meant to. He told me I'd assaulted him. He dented my car, on the side where my 8 month olds car seat is, my baby had started screaming as soon as it happened. He just kept repeating that what I'd done was a crime (I know it can be but it depends on the situation). He was nasty and I was upset.

I don't know what I want from this thread as I know I'm likely to be given abuse for driving through the puddle but I'm on my own with DS (we're now home) and I just needed to let someone know what happened I think.

The car behind me was quite close though.

So you didn’t slow down yourself to mitigate this danger

And you say your child is perfectly safe

MacduffsMuff · 06/08/2020 07:58

@ivykaty44 you're determined to pick this apart every tiny little bit and try to make the OP feel really shit aren't you. That she's a danger to her child. It's a dick move and you know it.

It's perfectly easy to understand exactly what happened in these circumstances, not just how you want to twist it in your head. Much more fun for someone like you to try to blame the OP, rather than the man who threw an object at her car though eh?

RomeoLikedCapuletGirls · 06/08/2020 08:03

To qualify, I'm a man, I'm 6'2, and grew up in a pretty rough area.

In which case I’m sure the other man wouldn’t have hurled a battery pack at your car!

mylittlesandwich · 06/08/2020 08:12

@ivykaty44 oh stop it, I had slowed, I then slowed further. The stretch of road is just off the motorway and isn't long. I did as much as I could in the time that I had.

I hope the quote to fix your car isn’t too expensive OP as he may renegade on his offer if he doesn’t appreciate repair costs.

Oh god you’re hilarious. One of those posters

@CausingChaos2 that's why I'm getting more than one in writing so hopefully he can see that these are fair quotes.

You deserved it for carelessly splashing him.

MacduffsMuff · 06/08/2020 10:32

@LuluLala2 oh don't be silly, you sound about 10 years old. 🤣

Iwalkinmyclothing · 06/08/2020 10:41

I hate when I get splashed by cars. I wouldn't throw something at a car though, that's insane behaviour. I'd just think "another arsehole driver".

mylittlesandwich · 06/08/2020 10:50

@LuluLala2 if you'd read the OP and the rest of the thread I didn't carelessly splash him. I had little choice, either I splashed him or caused an accident.

For anyone still interested in this saga, the quotes are too expensive, I will need to go through my insurance. Called the police as my insurance advised me to.

@mylittlesandwhich what a nightmare! Will he not have to pay anything at all?

mylittlesandwich · 12/08/2020 14:45

Unlikely, although if they do manage to recover costs my no claims will be reinstated

I've been splashed on purpose before and fantasise every time about throwing a brick through those stupid bastards' windscreens. Angry But... I haven't yet.

If you tried to apologise for accidentally splashing them, then it isn't on what happened to you.
