Is it possible to have a blood test requested by a hospital done in a GP surgery? I have had one done before but didn't know if this had changed due to COVID

Yes, if you have the form.
Well, you could in mine, anyway.

If you have the form yes. They all get sent to the hospital lab. So results will go to the doctor/consultant who requested the test and has complete the form

I'm a community nurse and we take blood using hospital forms and GP forms. It all goes to the hospital in my area.

In my area hospital (secondary care requests!) All go to a secondary care clinic. Primary care (gp) requests done in gp practice

In my area GP surgeries don't do blood tests at all - even if it's the GP who has asked for the test. It's very annoying as it can be very difficult to get an appointment at the phlebotomy department and it costs a fortune to park at the hospital........

My GP surgery have always done hospital blood tests but have now recently stopped doing them because of covid 19 even though i had 2 blood tests in April and one in June.
I was told that if its a hospital request I have to have it done at a hospital even though my local hospital is not the hospital requesting the blood test.
Its just a bit annoying as my GP surgery it right by my house, the hospital is a 40 min bus journey with a very limited bus service at the moment.

Practice nurse.
Yes we do this regularl as long as you have the form, although our bloods go to one hospital for processing yet another may have requested them, which can be a headache for people accessing the results. Often patients call in and collect a printed copy of the results and take them to their hospital appointment. Different areas work differently though.
We've continued to do this as normal all through lockdown.
Who has told you this? A new staff member?? I'd double check.

riverdale2020 · 04/08/2020 19:16

No it was a regular member of staff and I explained I have the form, I will double check as I feel really anxious about using public transport at the moment.

Thanks 😀

It seems to vary - I had mine done at the GP surgery recently as my specialist wrote and requested this to reduce trips to hospital.

Hope you get it sorted

They dont like to do it and dont have to unless they want to.
Sometimes they do it to be helpful but they dont get paid for it and it takes the nurses time up, when instead the nurse could be doing work that the practice needs doing.
