Am trying to plan the best layout for our smallest dc. If I can get a floor plan I will but all I will say is def no high sleepers. Have wrestled with one for 13 years and can't wait to see the back of it!!

Try and get as much things on the wall. Tv, shelf's for storage etc. Obviously you'll need a bed and drawers that's probably about as much you could get in floor space wise. If you need a desk look at fold down options so can be lifted up when not in use.

Ottoman bed. Hides a multitude of sins.

BogRollBOGOF · 04/08/2020 14:13

We had to build DS a mid-sleeper as we could get a matress in the room but there was no space to assemble a bed frame, plus the radiator made that corner too tight and it overhangs the window. The ceiling height was too snug for a standard high sleeper.

There is a wardrobe in the corner by the door that contains drawers and shelves. An IKEA Besta running underneath the bed across the width. It feels like a comfortable room and DS(9) loves it. Just as well as that's about all we could do with it!

A standard bed would have occupied half the floor then be snug for access to the wardrobe.

Build a narrow desk that sits over the end of the bed, better still put castors on the bottom so it can be moved forwards and backwards to give more leg room when using it as a desk.

Could that cupboard next to the boxroom be used as the wardrobe/other storage for the bedroom.

YY to as much wall mounting as possible, although I understand this might be difficult if renting.

Ikea have some good storage beds that are not high sleepers.

Not ideal but this is how my box room was done as a "show home". Agree with making use of walls as much as possible.

What's the cupboard outside the room? If it's not an airing cupboard can that be used as storage for child in smallest room?

givemushypeasachance · 04/08/2020 14:28

Turn to Ikea - they make a specialism of how best to use tiny spaces and have plenty of storage and practical things. Particularly with wall-mounting, like a fold down desk, and hanging storage.

BalloonSlayer · 04/08/2020 14:31

Get a 2'6" bed. It's plenty big enough for a child.

You can get bed bases with drawers which are useful.

Fantasisa · 04/08/2020 14:36

Ours has the bulkhead of the stairs in (nightmare!) so we had to get a carpenter in to box it off and fit a midsleeper in on top of the bulkhead. I wish we hadn't gone midsleeper tbh, as although it is a full single, the extra storage underneath it doesn't make up for not being able to climb in and cuddle him at bedtime.

It has a chest of drawers in too and most of DD's clothes go in our wardrobe.

Modestandatinybitsexy · 04/08/2020 15:26

Can you build the bed in across the window with storage underneath and shelves above? And then put a wardrobe next to the door?

I think wall mounting things as much as possible is the answer.

How old is the child? Could they get away with a toddler bed or a smaller single?

Dauphinois · 04/08/2020 16:55

I'm not sure of the exact size of our box room but we got a divan bed with huge drawers underneath, and an Ikea Stuva wardrobe with drawers, as the footprint is tiny but it holds a lot.

Lots of shelves and hooks on the walls for books, PE kits etc.

Ikea is great for ideas. We couldn't have a bedside table as it stopped the divan drawers opening but we've got 3 square floating shelves from the ceiling to bed height that really help.

Ottoman beds are great for storage. I agree with using the cupboard outside as a wardrobe if possible. IKEA Kallax units are also great instead of a chest of drawers, as they tend to not be as deep (I’ve got a very small double bedroom and have a wall of Kallax units for clothes storage).

Quick bump for more ideas...

That's pretty much what I think ours will be like. Looks good! And the midsleeper gives more floorspace.
Thank you!

Seconding the 2'6 bed, just those extra couple of inches made all the difference as it could them for right up against the back wall next to the radiator. Then a narrow wardrobe from IKEA fit at the end of the bed.
Most of their children's ones are deep enough for adult sized hangers but usually a small footprint, one with drawers underneath adds a lot of useable storage.

Underbed storage boxes to make the use of that bit of space and then we fit a narrow chest of drawers and a Billy bookshelf. The tall one with doors on the bottom half can fit loads in.

DespairingHomeowner · 18/08/2020 20:40

For child up to secondary age a smaller single will be fine ( I had smaller bed from half a bunk til age 12, no issues)

Bed under window; tallboy chest then shelves

Does your youngest NEED hanging space or would drawers, hooks & maybe a small clothes rail (eg in a corner)do : young kids clothes get worn more regularly so I don’t think dust would be an issue

Under bed storage v useful - is go for sliding door vs pull out drawer for a child (you get more space & harder to break)

DespairingHomeowner · 18/08/2020 20:40

Also: all white helps it look bigger

Twinslot shelving is great, easy to install & you can take it with you when you move

Think an ikea trip is on the cards!

We have the Ikea hemnes daybed. The drawer pace is awesome and it pulls out into a double when required. The drawers though I can’t believe how much stuff I can get in them!
