What time do your 9 year olds go to bed?

Just that really? DTs have been pushing bed time later and later which I don't have a problem with - it's summer, it's light, and I have fond memories of playing in the garden on summer evenings. They've been going to bed around 9 and asleep for 9.30.

DH seems to think they should be in bed for 730...

I think we are in the minority going by a different thread I read here. Our ds (9) is in bed by 8-830 at the latest and is allowed to play or read for half an hour. He can then listen to an audiobook but no lights on.

LER83 · 04/08/2020 11:24

My 9 year old goes to sleep anytime between 9 & 10. When he is back at school it will more likely be 8.30/9ish. My 5 year old is in bed for 7.30 and asleep at 8pm!

Dauphinois · 04/08/2020 11:25

At the moment, between 9 and 10pm.

In term time I aim for lights out by 9pm.

Official 8pm bedtime he can then read in bed for half an hour but as its the school holidays we are not strict about it so it's often 9 before he's in bed at the moment. We will get him back into the 8pm bed 8.30 lights out before school goes back in September. DH is working ludicrous hours at the moment so slackening bed time means we can still manage a family film, meal or game when he finally falls through the door.

Mine goes to bed between half 8 and 9 at the moment. On school days it's generally before half 8. We are up at 6 though so any later results in grumpy, tired children

PaperMonster · 04/08/2020 11:36

Mine goes to sleep between 9.30 and 10. Usually in bed for 9-9.15, although we all go upstairs about 8pm to wind down.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/08/2020 11:39

Mine turns nine in September. She goes up to bed between 7.30 and 8 (closer to 7.30). Dh and I read for up to 30mins, then she can read for 30-45 mins after.

She knows if she isn't tired she can read for longer.

Her issue is she doesn't lie in. So frequent later nights just result in grumps and eye bags. If she lay in, I'd not mind moving the bedtime back.

wendz86 · 04/08/2020 11:47

Usually in bed around 8.30 and reads till around 9. On saturdays she goes up around 9.

BereftOfInk · 04/08/2020 11:49

8&10 bed for 8, lights out 830.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/08/2020 11:57

8-8.30 at the moment. Might move earlier in September/when schools return. Usually asleep by nine (unless the soldiers are on the firing range, but that stops by 10)

GreyishDays · 04/08/2020 11:59

Between nine and ten at the moment. Wakes at 7 to 7.30am.

Lights out before nine when back to school. But he’ll wake at 6.30am with that.

Have you googled how much sleep they need for each age? Might reassure your OH that they’re getting enough.

GreyishDays · 04/08/2020 12:02

Here says about 10 hours. Obv there’s some variation in that.

Is your husband annoyed at losing his evening? It seems to happen quite suddenly. We’ve accepted that the earliest we sit down together is now about nine. Maybe on some nights you can take turns to do something earlier on in the evening while the other deals with children.

Juiceey · 04/08/2020 12:08

10:30 bedtime here!

AriettyHomily · 04/08/2020 13:08

Thanks all, they seem within the realms of normal then!

@GreyishDays yes I think so...he wants his evenings back and I find them pretty good company to have around.

About 9ish for our 8 year old but I’m not precious about it. During school time it’ll be brought forward to 8-830.

Zoflorabore · 04/08/2020 14:31

DD is 9 and goes into year 5 in September. Also have a 17yr old ds about to start year 13.

Ds has been allowed to self regulate since his sixth form shut for the summer holidays and dd’s bedtimes have got later and later, probably since dp has been furloughed and they have been having lots of film nights where normally he would have to be asleep at a reasonable hour.

Currently it’s around 11-12 and she can sleep for a good 12 hours at least but that brings other problems like completely missing breakfast and it knocking on for days.

We are very aware that her bedtime needs a huge overhaul and today she was up at 11.20 which would be considered early which is bloody ridiculous.

It was so easy to slip into bad habits but will be much harder to get out of them.

Luckily, dd loves to go up and read too so we will be encouraging that and keeping the later nights for the weekend.

Reading other people’s responses has made me realise even more that her bedtimes have been ridiculously late and I’m embarrassed.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 04/08/2020 14:41

7.30pm is much too early unless they really need the sleep. DS9 goes up about 9 and he usually reads til 9.30 and listens to an audiobook til 10 with the lights out. He doesn't seem to need much sleep, though, so can often be found sneaking across his bedroom with a torch searching for a new book.

I'm more than happy for him to stay up later during the holidays so long as he's in bed reading and resting for the last hour. Wanting evenings to ourselves has long gone - DS14 stays up later than I do most evenings and I've grown to quite like them being around til later. With the work I do I often used to come home and only have an hour or so with them before bedtime, now I get all evening.

RabbitBeaver · 04/08/2020 15:11

In the holidays my 9 year old goes to bed whenever I do, which is anywhere between 9.30-11.30ish. He gets up about 8.30.

During school times he goes to bed at 8 and lights out at 8.30 to get up at 6ish.

TheChosenTwo · 04/08/2020 15:21

Average is around 9:30/10. Goes to bed just after 9 and then reads. Not really much earlier than that, he’s just never tired regardless of how much we’ve done during the day Confused but sleeps in in the mornings.
Sometimes he goes to bed later but to be honest we have older teens so lost evenings to ourselves years ago, and anyway, we have quite a lot of fun together in the evenings so although I do sometimes hark back to the days where we just had the older 2 as young girls and they would both be tucked up in bed by 7:30, life has moved on!
