Do you have a Roomba or similar?

and would you recommend it?

Sweeping floors is my most hated job. We've got wooden floors all downstairs but also all the usual crap - beanbag, thick rug, dining table and chairs. Will it navigate those?

I love my eufy. I’d wanted one for ages and wasn’t sure - it was on offer in amazon and I took the risk!
It’s brilliant - we have carpets and hard floors all good. Fights a little with the thick pile rug but eventually just goes around it.
Then I carry it upstairs and leave it to do bedrooms. It hasn’t fallen down the stairs yet (though if it could do the stairs I’d be even happier)
Like others say I do find that I clear the room before going to bed as it comes on first thing in the morning - so the house is tidier!
It doesn’t like leads/wires or trainer laces so shoes and wires need to be put away or tucked out of reach.
Now I just want a mop version .....

Robo Lawn mowers are injuring and sometimes killing hedgehogs.

I wouldn’t have one.

LadyCatStark · 05/08/2020 15:15

Thanks everyone. I think we’ll get one. We couldn’t in our old house as it had a loop pile carpet in the hall and landing and I had visions of it pulling up a whole line 🙈.

LunaLoveFood · 05/08/2020 15:40

We have a neato and absolutely love him. Haven't hoovered (except the stairs in 3 years). He even sends me maps of where he has cleaned each day. We have a large dog with lots of hair and he copes really well.

catgirl1976 · 05/08/2020 16:23

I'm going to ask for a Eurly for my birthday. Is the cheapest model ok? I've got very low pile carpet (cheap)

PalTheGent · 05/08/2020 16:33

@Rainingallweek

I have a Roomba and a Braava. Both do their jobs very well and live just under the stairs so definitely not the recommended space.

Also disgusted at how much crap they pick up despite regular hoovering.

Yep. Same here.

The Roomba has about 10-20cm space on one side of the base and an open door on the other side. About 1-2 times a week I have to rescue a marooned roomba and manually put it back on the base (it goes round at least once a day). This is not so bad.

They are not maintenance free. They need emptying and wiping down every few days to make sure the sensors all work.

They also have an uncanny knack of getting in your way. They shoudn't, because they are not sentient, but they alwas seem to know when I want to go through a door and arrange it so that they are in the way when I do!

Brilliant on tiles/wood and ok-good on carpet. I spent time every day marvelling at how much crap I have to empty out of them (with multiple dogs we empty more than most).

We also have the basic model Braava which is good for keeping floors clean between major/manual cleans. It's also pretty cheap (compared to the Roomba).

Robo Lawn mowers are injuring and sometimes killing hedgehogs.

I read this too.

I have a hedgehog that comes in the garden every afternoon for a snuffle, and after I read about it, I kept a close eye, worried about it running the hedgehog over. I don't think it's the problem the article makes out

  1. both the mower and the hedgehog are pootling around the garden at low speed, the chances of them being in the same spot at the same time are low, plus it would have to be a straight on hit for anything more than the hedgehog being pushed out of the way.

  2. a live hedgehog is a rather different obstacle to a dead one.

  3. I decided to put down one of Ds's old soft toys to see what happened, and perhaps mine has better sensors than the researcher's, but it touched it, stopped, and reversed away.

So I'm not saying it's not happening, but I don't think it's something to be concerned about, vs. say, driving a car at night.

Megan2018 · 06/08/2020 09:59

We have a Cordy, he hoovers and mops. Bloody brilliant. Copes with our uneven slate floors and thick carpets.
We have cats so plenty of hair and the baby crawls around after him. Win win

Megan2018 · 06/08/2020 10:02

Oh and ours lives in the cupboard under the stairs, he sometimes struggles to dock because of this but we wanted the dock away from the baby (pre baby was docked in hall). When baby is older will probably relocate back to hall but for now we don’t mind rescuing him!

Bridecilla · 07/08/2020 20:27

Thanks all, I'm sold. Just got to find a deal on now!

My mum has a Neato - it’s fab! Good on both hard and carpeted floors.

Cam2020 · 07/08/2020 20:55

I'm sure they're fabulous, but it just reminds me of The Pooptastrophe story that circulated years ago.

Enderman · 07/08/2020 21:07

We have a a Eufy, the one with the app so you can set it off from your phone. I talk to it like it’s real. Blush

I would completely recommend one.

TrickyD · 09/08/2020 17:58

Our Eufy30C was delivered yesterday. Like others we were amazed at how much debris he picked up on what we thought were clean floors.

DH humoured me when I said I was getting one, just saying ‘A gadget too far”, but he is thrilled with it.

It’s connected to the app and Alexa. The only very minor criticism is the poor quality of the adhesive strips which you need in order to fix the magnetised barriers to tell him where not to go. We have a sunken doormat and he got in and couldn’t get out, hence the barrier was needed.
Otherwise, excellent!

Enderman · 09/08/2020 18:16

Most importantly have you named it.

TrickyD · 09/08/2020 18:53

No! And I blame DH.,He set it up with Alexa while I was still in bed and just called it Robovac. Poor show.

Juanmorebeer · 09/08/2020 19:01

Desperate for one of these. Can someone please tag me with an idiots guide. I have no carpets in the whole house but what I do have is very slight steps between each room, think a difference in flooring without a strip between. Would one navigate this? Or be stuck in one room?

Could I put it downstairs one night then upstairs the next? Or up when the dog is downstairs with me etc?

Which is best for dog hair?

TrickyD · 09/08/2020 20:02

We are Robovac virgins only having had ours for 24 hours.
Ours will trundle down a one and half inch threshold between the kitchen and the conservatory, but won’t go back up. Fine if we start him in the kitchen. It sounds as if your slight steps would be OK.
You could carry it upstairs but it wants to go back to its charging station so you would need to bring it back when it has swept there,
We haven’t tried ours upstairs yet as he will want to go under our bed and I need to check for pills and earrings and assorted rubbish Blush before I let him loose there.

uglyface · 09/08/2020 20:17

What happens about a dining table and chairs? Our ground floor is all one level and wooden, but has an open plan kitchen/diner with a table and four chairs in. I worry that one would get stuck under there while we’re at work (wouldn’t want it to come on when we’re home due to open plan living and noise).

Enderman · 09/08/2020 20:43

@TrickyD you can change it! Go on the app. You owe it to your robovac to give it a decent name and talk to it like it’s real... Blush

TrickyD · 09/08/2020 20:51

Enderman, we certainly talk to him.
DH said it would be easier for the rest of the family to use him if he had a simple name. Not that I want DGCs messing about with him.
I shall give it thought.

TrickyD · 09/08/2020 20:54

Uglyface I think it depends on the chairs. Ours seems fine with those in the dining room, not keen on kitchen ones.

NiceGerbil · 09/08/2020 22:09

Anyone got an eufy with a mop as well?

Been thinking about getting one and this thread is great thanks op!
