Is there a way to send money without sharing back details?

I need to send someone some money. They don’t have PayPal and don’t want to do it via bank transfer. Is there another way to send money to them?

@Startofsomethingnew20 Could you please clarify if it's you or them who doesn't want to do a bank transfer?

LizzieMacQueen · 04/08/2020 09:03

After reading the thread on here where the OP was squirelling away £20 notes I'd be really wary of sending cash without any ways of identifying who it was going to. I too wonder if it's legitimate.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 04/08/2020 09:04

There's an app called Venmo ive seen advertised

ScarletAnemone · 04/08/2020 09:23

PayM is instant and the recipient gets a text to say the money has arrived. It takes a few minutes to set up the first time but after that it’s really quick.

AnotherEmma · 04/08/2020 09:36

Paym looks like a good solution actually.

lifesalongsong · 04/08/2020 09:51

No, it's the recipient who doesn't want to share bank details, not the OP

That would be the logical thought but it isn't actually clear from the OP's posts

Alexindiamondarmour · 04/08/2020 09:57

The OP says “they don’t have paypal and don’t want to do it via bank transfer”
I read this as the recipient doesn’t have PayPal and also doesn’t want to do it via bank transfer.

Western union but there will be a charge.

Startofsomethingnew20 · 04/08/2020 10:07

It was them who didn’t want to an electronic transfer. My preferred would have been PayPal (I would have even paid the fee so it was a business transaction but was told no).

Thank you all for the help and advice. It was to buy an item from FB marketplace but I have since pulled out of the transaction Blush.

After reading your posts, I was worried they would take my money and do a moonlight flit or something else dodgy was going on and I’d never get the item.

That does sound dodgy, OP. I'm glad you pulled out.

I'm still intrigued as to how they expected you to pay, though.

AnotherEmma · 04/08/2020 10:20

It does sound dodgy. Usually FB marketplace is for selling things locally so you would physically collect the item and hand over cash. For anything else (ie item being posted) I would use eBay and PayPal. Anyway I think you were right to pull out of this.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 04/08/2020 10:25

I know people who have been scammed on FB marketplace so sounds like you have done the right thing

Mumdiva99 · 05/08/2020 07:12

I use market place and am happy with cash on the doorstep, PayPal or a bank transfer. Same with either buying or selling. Anything else would raise alarm bells.

dudsville · 05/08/2020 07:16

Western union. You pay online, arranging for WU to take it from your bank account, and you can choose a location, a shop, for the recipient to collect cash. They won't know your bank details either.

Nothanksnota · 05/08/2020 07:51

From my understanding it's a bar idea to use electronic transfers for these purchases on FB marketplace. I think the idea being once the money is sent there is no reason for the seller to show up. Glad you exercised caution op.
