Eat out to help out.......................

Thanks for that ............. Hmm

No seriously, we had a lovely evening out, restaurant not cheap, but we were marking DH's 64th birthday later in the week and the fact that this time last year, I found a tiny lump, and I am still here, we also didn't organise a holiday this year due to the breast cancer fall out so we will spend a small % of it this month........... hey ho. Grin

The restaurant was buzzing, all joking aside it is a great initiative, and maybe something individual restaurants could embrace during fallow periods. What they lost on discount, they made up on us feeling woo hoo and spending a little bit more...

We went last night, to support a local publican who has raised money and coordinated resources for those struggling in our community during lockdown.

They already do two for one, so our meal ended up costing next to nothing! We were forced to buy extra drinks to help out Wink.

FrameByFrame · 04/08/2020 12:32

It's a lovely idea, and I may well take advantage, but would much rather the money had gone towards getting schools properly and safely ready for September.

Hopeful201 · 04/08/2020 12:33

It is a good idea to get people out again. We were fearful of going out, but went out last weekend and found the pub to be excellent. It really is about us trying to do things again.

On another note whilst chains are seen as having pots of cash, many are small family businesses set up as a franchise. They also employ a lot of people.

We will probably try to go out a few times on this deal as it is good for us to get out of the house-full time wfh means I have got used to staying in too much.

@troppibambini

What pisses me off are the restaurants that are doing a set menu and you can only use the discount if you eat from that rather than the main menu.
Why would they do that, it makes no difference to them what they take the money off, they will get it back from the government regardless. That sounds like a business that doesn't understand the scheme
lifesalongsong · 04/08/2020 12:40

@LadyFlumpalot

I did raise an eyebrow when the local radio played the advert about this scheme immediately after the advert about losing weight to help fight Covid.

Hey, y'all need to lose weight and eat more healthily, BUT, here, have 50% off as much take away food as you can eat for the next month!

Er no, there is no discount on takeaway food and no obligation to eat any more calories that you would normally do. Of course obesity is a complex issue, I don't think a few cheaper meals out will tip the balance either way
Paddy1234 · 04/08/2020 12:50

Brilliant idea says me who is already on second visit in two days!

tankflybos · 04/08/2020 12:51

"DS and I are taking a trip into London next week for dinner at Marcus Waring's Tredwells. The discount won't be as huge due to prices, but it will definitely make a difference."

The discount will be exactly the same as any restaurant where your bill for food and soft drinks comes to £40.

@LadyFlumpalot what? Takeaway food isn't included in the scheme Hmm

TheChosenTwo · 04/08/2020 13:01

OP I think you’re very local to me!
We are going into Farnham tomorrow to take advantage of the offer and we have plans to eat out weekly although we do this during non pandemic times especially through the holidays where it seems the only way I can convince all the dc to come for a walk with me is by bribing them with food!

GreytExpectations · 04/08/2020 13:26

@LadyFlumpalot what? Takeaway food isn't included in the scheme hmm

Well of course it isn't. Sort of defeats the point of "Eat out to help out"

tankflybos · 04/08/2020 13:35

Yes @GreytExpectations I know that. I was replying to a poster who said you can get 50% off your takeaway

LadyFlumpalot · 04/08/2020 13:36

The advert I heard was promoting McDonalds involvement in the scheme, I did assume this was for takeaway, as I believed they still had a no eating in policy, but apparently not!

Very sorry, please ignore me and continue!

GreytExpectations · 04/08/2020 14:19

@tankflybos

Yes *@GreytExpectations* I know that. I was replying to a poster who said you can get 50% off your takeaway
Ah apologies my misunderstanding
forevercurious · 04/08/2020 16:02

Completely agree. I was initially a little sceptical about the whole scheme but DP and I went out for lunch yesterday to celebrate our anniversary. It was the first time we’ve eaten out since February and I was a little concerned due to social distancing etc however the restaurant we went to was lovely, tables spaced far apart, staff in masks, one time use menus (paper to be recycled), hand sanitzer available throughout. Despite the changes in place it was nice to do something a little bit normal!

TokyoSushi · 04/08/2020 16:04

I've already used it twice and I'm using it again tonight!

BoxAndKnife · 04/08/2020 16:58

@BlingLoving

DS and I are taking a trip into London next week for dinner at Marcus Waring's Tredwells. The discount won't be as huge due to prices, but it will definitely make a difference. Looking forward to it.
@BlingLoving I think Tredwell's is only open on Thursdays and Fridays for the next few weeks isn't it? EOTHO is Mon-Weds.

I only know this because DH and I were in London yesterday and thought of popping in for lunch (it's a favourite of ours) but it's not open until Thursday.

BoxAndKnife · 04/08/2020 17:06

Oh ignore me, apparently it's doing Weds evening EOTHO, although the website says otherwise - confusing!

Hope you enjoy it. I still dream about their stupendous rosemary bread Grin

BlingLoving · 05/08/2020 13:34

@BoxAndKnife I think they only open this week for first time and certainly for Wednesday, it's dinner only as you say. We've booked in for the early dinner sitting at 6pm. And I think they're only opening Wednesday-Saturday, but not 100% sure on that.

V excited.

@tankflybos I meant proportionately - ie the meal will still be expensive as we'll get the max of £10 per head off which as a percentage of the bill will be low. But I'll take it, as it's better than nothing and we're really looking forward to it.

CarlottaValdez · 05/08/2020 13:38

I went out for breakfast with DH this morning and really enjoyed it. I think it’s quite a good scheme. We’ll try to use it again before it finishes.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 05/08/2020 13:42

I'm going tonight but must confess I'm taking my own knife, fork and glass 😂😂😂

We're also higher risk and have been semi shielding for months so this will be a big step for us but we feel we have to push towards normality at some point. The world can't just stop.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 05/08/2020 13:46

frame if we don't get the economy rolling then schools going back in September will be the least of their worries.

This has been done to give people a push towards normal. And it's very much needed.

Proudtocare · 05/08/2020 13:52

I'm calling it, stuff your gob to save a job!! Grin

TheChosenTwo · 05/08/2020 16:35

@Proudtocare 😂😂 I like that!
We are back from lunch, £35 taken off our £70 bill but at 12.5% service charge. The service was terrible, the food mediocre (well mine was cold) but I did pay the tip!!

Miljea · 06/08/2020 15:48

Well, we did it last night!

It was a bit odd, sitting in wooden garden booths (we moved inside a bit later as it was cooling and the outdoor lighting wasn't quite up to scratch.

But we got £26 of, and the food was fine.

As mentioned upthread, we have little fear of Covid, anyway. We've had zero patients in my local DGH for weeks now, down from 45 at peak.
