Found 2 fleas!

We went away this past weekend and left our dog (working cocker) at a farm boarding place and he's come home with 2 fleas (that we've seen). What do we do now to treat them?!

Been to two supermarkets today and couldn't find flea shampoo so will be going to the special pet shop in town tomorrow but what measures can we take tonight? We washed all bedding that came home with him.

You need prescription strength treatment from your vet - get at least three month's supply - and a household spray like Indorex or RIP Flea. Don't waste money on any other over the counter treatments or shampoos.

Wolfiefan · 03/08/2020 20:04

You should be treating monthly with vet prescribed treatments. Nothing from the supermarket will work. And Indorex the house too.

Rockbird · 03/08/2020 20:15

We have a few of them too. We've been indorexing the house and we use Advantage on the cats which I was told is very good.

What with though OP? Frontline and OTC stuff won’t work.

rainatnightlove · 03/08/2020 20:56

@Wolfiefan Prescription stuff from the vets (not entirely sure what it's called but it's part of the package we pay for monthly with the vets).

Tonight I'm going to hoover and spray the place with the spray we got today and I'll also repeat that tomorrow once I've got the treatment from the vets.

Don’t bother spraying If it’s supermarket type stuff. Check the name of the medication you use monthly. Frontline isn’t effective in many places yet vets still sell it!

Shmithecat2 · 03/08/2020 21:08

Indorex the house, speak to the vet tomorrow to see what they can offer for treatment, and vacuum your house every day for the next two weeks.

Buddywoo · 03/08/2020 21:14

I have used Frontline and found our dog was covered in fleas, the vet said dogs have become resistant to it. On Nexgard now, one tablet a month, and it worms them at the same time.

Wolfiefan · 03/08/2020 21:28

We use Nexgard here too. No issues.

ImFree2doasiwant · 03/08/2020 21:30

If you already treat monthly, there should be no reason to treat again. The fleas he's picked up will die. I'd just indorex the house.

rainatnightlove · 03/08/2020 22:17

Thank you everyone! I've just sprayed and hoovered the house so hopefully it's a good measure to stop more breeding. Will be treating pup tomorrow and hoovering each day.

Lots of bowls of hot Fairy water on your floors tonight..
Update how many you find!!

tillytoodles1 · 03/08/2020 22:38

I have a cat and occasionally a flea jumps on me, maybe once or twice a year. I have no idea where they go but they just disappear.

rainatnightlove · 03/08/2020 23:50

@Feralkidsatthecampsite oooh I read about that online! In bed now so haven't done it tonight but maybe I'll try it tomorrow evening.

We use advocate which we get from the vet every month. Even using this my dog came back from the home boarder riddled with fleas and gave them to our other dog. I use Indorex for the house.

TheDoctorDances · 03/08/2020 23:55

A good way to check is to brush some hair from your dog directly a paper towel then wet it. If it turns red or pink, that’s flea dirt and your dog has them.

Shizzlestix · 03/08/2020 23:58

Indorex or RIP Fleas spray. Supermarket stuff is crap, also Bob Martin stuff was in the news recently re killing a dog?

Advantage is good, probably lots cheaper to buy independently rather than via the vet.

To really get rid, you need to spray individual rooms, do all material, close the door, then vacuum. Repeat a few days later.
