FROG - advice needed please!

Help MNers,

One of my cats has brought a frog back into our garden. The frog appears unharmed (no broken skin, is pretty active). I’ve put the frog in a box for now to keep it away from the cats.

The problem is, our garden is not at all frog friendly. It’s REALLY dry and we’re nowhere near any water, even small ponds.

I’m thinking I’m going to take the little chap to a park a few miles away where there are ponds and a lot of marshy bits.

Is this the right thing to do? Is there anything else I should be doing for him? I’ve put some leaves and a wet cloth in the box with him.

Argh.

I can’t take him until this PM so any and all advice welcome...

Thanks!

Aren’t you nice 😊 if you can bear it, a couple of slugs to keep him going probably wouldn’t go amiss.

Frogs can spread diseases between ponds so better to keep it local. At this time of year they often don't spend as much time in ponds anyway. Can you ask around neighbours and see if anyone has a more suitable environment. The frog can then return to their pond more easily next year.

Is it definitely a frog and not a toad? They need different environments.

Does it walk or hop?

Hello all, thanks so much for your advice and thoughts. A work call got cancelled so I’ve just set the little chap free.

Great advice about not taking him too far away so I took him to a smaller park that’s closer. It’s got lots of dark, damp undergrowthy bits with a relatively permanent large puddle / small pond. Hopefully that will do him for now and be a good place for him to hang out in the autumn / winter.

I tried the neighbours and nobody has a clue where he would have come from. We live relatively central in London so it’s a bit of a mystery - and he’s definitely a frog (a toad would have made more sense!).

Anyway, hopefully by now he’s scoping out his new home and finding some slugs of his own (I wasn’t brave enough to bring one in).

Thanks again for the advice Flowers
