Are you buying your kids uniform for Sept or waiting?

Just that really. Normally I would replace outgrown stuff about now to avoid the queues (or limited stock if online) in the last week of summer holidays. But this year, I am not so sure.... Seems plausible that school won’t reopen or will shut again quickly or go part time etc. What’s everyone else doing?

I'm in Scotland. We know they're going back in ten days, but know nothing yet about the details. I've bought some bits and pieces but not everything.

Meangallery · 02/08/2020 14:17

Both mine need suits and formal shoes - they are very skinny so leaving it till the last minute is never an option.

DominaShantotto · 02/08/2020 14:23

Handed more down from the eldest than I normally would do as it's just not had the wear and is knackered by now - but I've bought to top up to the normal quantity (and I'm wondering how the eldest has lost three fucking cardigans when school's been closed and non-uniform childcare since bloody March). Haven't sorted PE kit yet (need more than normal - normally they'd be t-shirts and shorts but need tracksuits as well as they're wearing it all day next year) or shoes which I'll do after next pay day. No ties - thank fucking God!

I never buy logoed stuff - it's optional and not dominant at our school. Very much only a few keen new parents and the odd family who buy the logoed stuff.

Got one child starting a new school and bought his entire uniform in the first week of the holidays. Did it early deliberately so it would be quieter and also to avoid the mandatory mask wearing, which is unavoidable now anyway.

DominaShantotto · 02/08/2020 14:53

We also had one moving from infants to juniors with different uniform needed so I couldn't eek out their old stuff much anyway.

mathsmonster · 02/08/2020 15:06

I have two DC starting at new schools in September. I have had to buy the whole shebang for DS1 because his secondary school are insisting on full uniform including blazer, rugby kit etc.

DS2 is making do with his brother's old stuff. Unfortunately they are on very different growth centiles so poor little DS2 looks a bit drowned in his uniform.

New shoes will probably be a must but our appointment at Clarks is not for a couple of weeks yet.

Whathappenedtothelego · 02/08/2020 15:13

I have checked what still fits, and feel we can get away with everything for at least a month or two, apart from shoes, so just going to get them for now.
I'll see how things go, and aim to replace anything that's looking too small around October half term/Christmas.

MovinOnUp · 02/08/2020 15:21

I'm in Scotland and bought everything last Thursday when it was announced here that schools would be going back full-time.
I didn't buy P.E kit though as I'm not sure if they'll be doing P.E or not.
Only bought 3 full outfits though, I usually buy a full outfit for each day.

labyrinthloafer · 02/08/2020 15:23

@BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze

I’ve bought everything but still not sure I’ll be sending them.
Haha snap! Couldn't face a panic-buying session later but not sure what I'll do in September. I have bought quite big!
Ohsuchaperfectday · 02/08/2020 15:27

Just spent 60 on the shoes.
Shame they didn't allow them as pp above to wear any football wear.

lyralalala · 02/08/2020 15:32

DS and DD's Head has been really sensible and thoughtful and has said that uniform from September to January (at least) will be black joggers and white or navy polo/tshirt so that people can pick it up from supermarkets and it won't go to waste if there are closures or part-time schooling.

The school uniform shop and a few well-to-do parents (for whom spending £200 on uniform that went unused wouldn't be an issue) are outraged, but she's said the children will need completely freshly washed outfits everyday so this makes more sense until we know.

I'm hoping it's actually a start point to going back to a more basic uniform. There was another Head 10 years ago who brought in a new uniform that was logo-ed everything and slightly unusual shade of uniform and it's just unnecessarily expensive for people.

LadyofTheManners · 02/08/2020 15:37

I'm waiting.
I did pick up two barely worn blazers for £10 each off our parent group, but DD needs new shirts and trousers. DS will have her trousers from this year (the benefits of a tomboy DD who will only wear boys school trousers).
But I just think I bought stuff last year which they wore for a few months and then the zombie apocalypse hit and it's all sat now.
I will wait until a week before and then Amazon it.

BrieAndChilli · 02/08/2020 15:38

I’ve ordered as M&S had 25% off (but were out of stock on some stuff I needed) and the logo we stuff needed ordering before end of July in order to get delivered in time.
Still need to get some bits LG Tom Asda like polo shirts, pe shorts etc and also shoes

Rebelwithallthecause · 02/08/2020 15:42

I bought the minimum necessary

LittleHootie · 02/08/2020 15:55

I bought 5 of everything cos last year I got sick of emergency washes at end of week. Now wondering if it was a good investment but it all looks very big so hopefully will get worn eventually. Trainers only at the school
for first term, so at least I dont have to fork out for shoes yet.

SpringSunshineandTulips · 02/08/2020 16:06

I’ve got my eldest everything as going on to secondary so a whole new kit needed. It usually lasts the whole year and I really hope they’ll be back at some point to use it. I wasn’t going to get two jumpers so only purchased one thinking I would get the second if and when needed but found one second hand so got it. My youngest only needs new shoes so will get them in a few weeks. I really hope they get to use them!!

Justgivemewine · 02/08/2020 16:12

@Duckchick

We are waiting to buy shoes in case he had a growth spurt and will squeeze into last year's for everything else. If schools are still open in November ish I'll do a proper shop.
This ^^

Hopefully the current stuff will do for now as I bought it in bigger sizes to make it last anyway.
The only problem will be shoes but they can wait until after the inevitable august growth spurt that’ll happen if I buy them now.

whirlwindwallaby · 02/08/2020 16:25

Already had new trousers and shirts a year ago ready for DS to grow into (age 12 lasted 3 years). I've got new games and PE shorts from the uniform pool. I've bought a new blazer for this year as the school expect full uniform from September and he needed one for the next two years anyway.

Deelish75 · 02/08/2020 18:06

DS starts secondary. So far I've got his blazer, ties and PE kit (specialist shop) will be getting his shirts and trousers in a couple of weeks. He also has the option to wear a jumper and a PE hoodie so will order those in September.
DD is still in primary and her school uniform still (just about) fits her, but will get her the next size up in October.
They've both got appointments to have their feet measured in a couple of weeks so will get their new school shoes then. DD normally needs new shoes every six months but I'm hoping DS can do a full school year.

Parker231 · 02/08/2020 18:10

@lyralalala - the schools near have said there won’t be school uniform when the start back in September - just clean, practical clothes. Parents are very happy not having to buy new school clothes.

SpringSunshineandTulips · 02/08/2020 18:19

@Parker231 I’m
Glad mine are wearing uniform after the Previous 5 weeks Of non uniform and moaning they had nothing to wear. Uniform is much easier.

Parker231 · 02/08/2020 18:30

My DC’s are older but their school didn’t have uniform - much easier (and cheaper) as they just wear ‘normal’ clothes that they wear out of school, weekends and holidays. Staple wardrobe of jeans, T-shirt and hoodie.

Noitjustwontdo · 02/08/2020 18:31

Already bought it. I didn’t need to buy all new of everything because they obviously didn’t get a full years wear out of their existing stuff and it all still fits.

soundsystem · 02/08/2020 19:15

I've got a couple of Summer dresses that I bought at Easter as DD had a growth spurt so she can wear those, and they've to go in PE kit in PE days (black shorts/joggers and a white t-shirt), so that will do us for the first week or two until we see what's going to happen...

I'm holding off on shoes until I get her feet measured this week, as I had to buy shoes at Easter as well and she's outgrown them

Pimmsypimms · 02/08/2020 19:23

I've bought most bits. I've left it until the last few weeks before and couldn't get the sizes I needed. Just need to get shoes a couple more school jumpers and bag for ds now.
