Hello
I'm looking for inspiration for a family picnic
Please tell me
Your favourite picnic foods. I know I want sausage rolls and red apples

We usually keep picnics quite simple, ham/cheese rolls, fruit, crisps, pork pie. Once I went a bit fancy and did Spanish omelette with tapas style side dishes but my family weren't impressed! If it's just DH & I we might take a rotisserie chicken and a rice salad. It can be a bit if a faff with needing cutlery, plates etc etc. My DM used to make incredibly posh picnics to take to outdoor theatre shows & concerts but it was a huge amount of organisation and loads to carry.

Dozer · 01/08/2020 18:40

Are you driving there or walking?

If the latter the lighter to carry the better!

Dozer · 01/08/2020 18:41

Most cold sausage rolls are horrible.

Baguette, butter and cheese!

TinyMetalBirds · 01/08/2020 18:46

Baguette, Brie, ready sliced cheddar, ham
Potato salad
Strawberries
Pork pies
Crisps
Cake

Grandsons' favourite is a trip to Morrisons on the way to choose a meal deal each! I always take crisps so they don't choose that as the snack item. They often choose a salad rather than a sandwich which impresses me.
Or, take buttered bread rolls and a variety of sandwich fillings for a DIY affair along with quiche, hard boiled eggs, salad, fruit and crisps.

Thanks Loads of good ideas. The Spanish omelette sounds fab. How annoying when ppl don't appreciate stuff Grin

We take a fresh baguette, with nice ham, cheese, crudités, posh crisps, fruit and some sort of baked pudding. Also take a chopping board, butter, bread knife and make the baguette fresh when we sit down. It tastes amazing!

Also pop in ice blocks and drink cartons, rubbish bag, napkins, plastic plates. My husband carries it all! 😂 We scale it down if walking a long way from the car to picnic spot.

Ooh great ideas thank you
Fair point about cold sausage rolls. Nothing quite matches fresh from the oven

Yes the bread and cheese idea is so good

We find wraps are great for a picnic. No fuss, easy to hold the ingredients don’t fall out. Chunks of cheese, carrot and cucumber sticks with a dip. Fruit, yogurt frubes, crisps. Boiled egg is great to give an energy boost.
Water, juice boxes, small bottle of plonk if not driving.

Ace1185 · 01/08/2020 19:13

We have simple, junk picnics. Sandwiches, yogurts, fruit, crisps, dairylea dunkers, sausage rolls, pork pies, biscuits etc

Grumpbum123 · 01/08/2020 19:17

Picnic loaves are the favourites around here

Raera · 01/08/2020 19:24

@Grumpbum123
What's a picnic loaf please?

There is something beautifully English picnic/ famous five about a picnic that contains hard boiled eggs. I'm vegan now 😬 but these are one of the things I miss. With salad cream 🙈

Hot calzone. Or pizza, but that requires more careful handling. Beats sandwiches 😁

AdaColeman · 02/08/2020 08:30

No picnic is complete without hard boiled eggs with celery salt for dipping! Have a great time!

EatsShootsAndRuns · 02/08/2020 08:30

Was going to say Salmon sandwiches with hard-boiled eggs and salad but then saw that you're vegan. 🤭

Tomato and red onion salad is lovely, with a splish of olive oil and fresh basil.

Crisps, supermarket own brand Mr. Kipling cake slices and Jaffa Cakes, ham, egg and cheese salad sarnies on soft white rolls, cartons of orange squash and some type of fruit.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 02/08/2020 17:52

I'm not veggie but I do have vegan ham, cheese and mayo in my sarnies and they're really nice.

diplodocusinermine · 02/08/2020 17:57

Our picnic today was flatbreads with ham, cheese, tomato and Dijon mustard, hard boiled eggs, crisps and some of the best strawberries we've had in ages, and some oat and raisin biscuits with lots of good coffee.

We often do a big platter of different cheeses, tomatoes, pate, grapes, maybe pork pie or scotch eggs, smoked salmon, avocado and good bread and butter. Big bar of good chocolate for pudding.
