Online Delivery Insurance?

Hello, quick random question if anyone has come across this? I'm in the process of buying a piece of furniture and this is an option (automatically checked) on the checkout page adding another £6 to delivery charge.

RAPID REPLACEMENT - FOR DAMAGE, LOST OR LATE DELIVERIES*
PRIORITY
CUSTOMER SERVICE - JUMP THE QUEUE
*DAMAGES MUST BE REPORTED WITHIN 24HRS OF DELIVERY

I thought if you buy something online and it is damaged by the people delivering it (not sure how you lose a table but whatever!) then it's up to the seller to replace it and deal with the delivery company? As long as you report it immediately etc.

Is this a new thing to have to pay an additional amount to insure your delivery? Can they legally refuse to replace a damaged item if I uncheck the box? Have never come across it before! I can give them a call tomorrow to check but just wondered if anyone had insight.

Thank you! Smile

It's covered by the Consumer Contract Regulations (for now) and that's that. Of course firms are free to offer cover above and beyond that level of protection Hmm and you are just as free to explain to them where the nearest lake is. If they start trying little tricks like pre-checked boxes and "forgetting" to remove the additional cover then they are in breach of various additional regulations.

Companies aren't allowed to add their own terms to the law, either.

Personally, the moment I saw that pop up (pre checked too) then I would not be buying from that outlet. Which they would probably be quite happy with as I can be the customer from hell.

Thanks Professor! and you are just as free to explain to them where the nearest lake is Grin!

I will call them tomorrow I think and get some assurances before I part with any cash! Appreciate the insight!
