What happens to prisoners if they need carers?

Random question I know.

If a prisoner needs to have carers to help them out of bed, to wash, dress etc... what happens? I'm thinking those with long sentences who need help when they are older who in the outside world would either go into a care home or have carers coming into their home.

In theory, prisoners should be housed in a prison able to meet their needs (e.g., a prisoner who requires a wheelchair should be in a wheelchair accessible prison) and should be given the support needed in order to meet their basic care needs and to participate in the daily routine of prison life (e.g., education courses, association, etc).

In reality an overstretched and underfunded system means many fall through the gaps with guards and other prisoners plugging gaps in care and prisoners not getting the care needed.

@SoloMummy those links don't work.

Good question OP, I'm interested in the answer too.

I know that if prisoners have to go into hospital they remain handcuffed to the warden. There was a female prisoner in the maternity unit when I had DS.

Sorry, did you really just type "real people"?

The foulness of some posters just beggars belief.

They have care packages provided.

Also depending on security risk and their medical condition, they may not be cuffed in hospital but will always be accompanied by 2 officers (and if high risk potentially a lot more).

Prison buddies are also used for support but should not be providing personal care such as washing, moving and handling.

I used to work with a guy who turned out to be grooming underage girls. He was in a wheelchair and received a prison sentence. After a couple of months he was released because the prison wasn't wheelchair accessible/friendly. Honestly shocking. Don't know what the conditions of his release were though.

@BubblyBarbara you’re disgusting.

Several domiciliary care companies in our local area are contracted by the Local Authority to provide care visits within the local open prison.

Well pardon me, I didn’t realise everyone else was so keen on convicts getting care before all the people not in prison who are suffering. Fix the care crisis in the non prison world first. I’m not ashamed to put that as a priority above taking care of people in jail Envy

Don't see where anyone said convicts should get care first. I'd like everyone to get the care they need. Not one group over another. As it stands prisoners fall through the net all the time especially where mental health is concerned. Its not like their getting 5 star 24 hour care, they get the bare minimum. I agree that social care is lacking but that doesn't mean I would support any group being left behind at the expense of another.
ArriettyJones · 02/08/2020 18:19

That’s not what you said @BubblyBarbara

Not so bubbly now, are you?
