Amazon scam..almost got caught

Dowser · 30/07/2020 21:25

House phone rang and a woman says your amazon prime subscription is due to end, true
She speaks very fast and not a native English speaker and the line is very noisy so I can barely make out what she says
So she says I will help you cancel it.
I ask a question..and she says if you cooperate with me , I will help you cancel it

Now I didn’t like that word...so I’m on red alert .
She wants to know if i have a mobile, tablet or computer ..so I said tablet

So she’s asking me to go into an App Store and download an app

So, I find it..and then in small print, thank god I had my glasses on, I saw , screen sharer

I said, hang on, I’ll have a word with my husband.
He said, that’s not right, it’s a scam, so he took over the call..and I went on amazon website and cancelled the subscription in seconds and screen shotted it.

Anyway he got annoyed with her and put the phone down.
Talk about aggressive, she rang back 5 times
We unplugged the phone in the end

The number was 016 something and looks like it. Could be related to a Vietnamese company vienettel or something . It was a Buxton area code

We put the phone back in again..and another call came through
This time it was 01421 which isn’t assigned to any area.

Anyway, just spoken to my son in law and they had one today too and he was in a shop and heard a guy on the phone getting stroppy with amazon.

I can’t believe how plausible she was..I’d have been more on my guard, if my blooming subscription wasn’t due to end in August.

They are getting too clever these people.

@DrDreReturns
You can’t trust emails from Amazon either, I’ve had about 4 recently. All scams ...

Casmama · 30/07/2020 22:23

To those people being smug and rude to the OP @ittooshallpass, @lifesalongsong ) how about you give your head a wobble and stop being a dick.
People from all walks of life frequent Mumsnet and the reason scams exist is that they are successful and people make money from them.
@Dowser, how kind of you to take the time to share your experience for the benefit of others and I'm sorry you have come across such arseholes who may have made you feel bad about doing so.)

terracottapot · 30/07/2020 22:23

I've had the Amazon Prime one and I knew it was a scam because I don't have Amazon Prime.

I can heartily recommend blasting an air horn down the phone if she rings back.

Intensely satisfying knowing the little shysters won’t be able to hear for ages.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 30/07/2020 22:25

Someone managed to hack my Amazon account and have something sent to America. Luckily I spotted it straight away (it's was only £30) and Amazon sorted it out and the money didn't come off my account. I don't know how they managed it because I'm really careful about ignoring strange emails and not clicking on links but I must have done it at some point.

Ellie56 · 30/07/2020 22:27

We're always getting these calls too. I think they're voice activated as if you don't speak it just clears down.

HazelBite · 30/07/2020 22:28

I've had a text purportedly from Amazon, I did check with Amazon customer services and was assured they don't send texts.

TatianaBis · 30/07/2020 22:30

I’ve had this call several times. Very obviously a scam.

Amazon Prime autorenews.

Mmmmycorona · 30/07/2020 22:30

I can’t believe how unnecessarily rude some posters are being.

WorraLiberty · 30/07/2020 22:32

Poor OP doesn't deserve a bashing here.

It's good to share these things and now anyone reading this, is sure to be extra alert if they get a phone call.

That's never a bad thing.

MsTSwift · 30/07/2020 22:35

I’ve got to the point where I don’t believe any communication from any company- don’t know how reputable companies can get in touch with their customers!

JemimaShore · 30/07/2020 22:38

I kept getting the fake HMRC "a warrant has been issued for your arrest" ones left on my answerphone a few months back. They were quite persistent.

It does make me sad that some of these are quite convincing and people DO fall for them Sad

The best advice is to treat every phone call as a scam-artist.

Justgivemewine · 30/07/2020 22:39

Another amazon one is related to the credit card. You get an automated message saying there’s a suspect transaction for some random amount like £83.91 and phone them urgently on xxxxx xxxxxx.
Apparently We’ve had about 4 fraudulent transactions for exactly the same amount every time, what a coincidence🙄

gingergiraffe · 30/07/2020 22:40

Amazon Prime, HMRC and various internet providers constantly phone my landline. Cutting me off or taking me to court. Ignore them all. I do hate in particular, the automated calls. Cheaper than employing an actual person I suppose as most people are now wise to these scams, but honestly, before 9am ones are particularly annoying.

safariboot · 30/07/2020 22:42

No phone calls, but I've had an uptick in scam emails claiming my Paypal or Netflix is restricted. Not sophisticated scam attempts though.

Also Shock at the people in this thread bashing OP for recognising something was dubious! Just because she didn't detect it in the first five seconds like it's a fucking TV gameshow.

I got caught by a phishing email myself back in the day. I was lucky I realised about 30 seconds after, so I was able to change my password before the hackers could do anything with my old one, because this was many years ago - criminals today are more sophisticated.

JemimaShore · 30/07/2020 22:42

The thing is, my bank genuinely does call me - on my mobile though. I've never had a scammer on my mobile (yet!!) - about matters of suspected fraud, "can you confirm this transaction is genuine," or (once) you've gone overdrawn etc.

I never believe it's actually them! They tell me to call them back, which I do - but there's even a scam where a scammer stays on the line, and then "answers" your call back - so you have to be so careful.

Bishybarnybee · 30/07/2020 22:44

I can't imagine what it must be like to earn your living doing this for a job. Knowing you are part of a scam, working for utter shits who are happy to rip off the unwitting. Just horrible.

BigBadVoodooHat · 30/07/2020 22:46

Now I didn’t like that word...so I’m on red alert

But then you downloaded an app because she told you to do so? Confused

practicallyperfectwithprosecco · 30/07/2020 22:47

Missed call from an 01636 number I didn't recognise earlier - ran back and got message this number is not recognised so guessing a scam

Thisfucker · 30/07/2020 22:48

Thanks @Dowser, I've had a few of these messages, it's good to know that it's a scam.
I can't understand the sheer nastiness of some posters. Unless you are perfect, stop having a go at someone who's trying to share a scam.

AnneElliott · 30/07/2020 22:48

They're awful op. I've had a few. I sometimes pretend to be a police control room and tell the duty inspector I'm tracing the call for Interpol- they drop the phone quite quickly!

Thisfucker · 30/07/2020 22:48

Agree. People still sometimes fall for these scams and any awareness is a good thing.
Nicketynac · 30/07/2020 22:50

I do get texts from Amazon - I have it set up so that if someone logs in from any device that is not my phone, they text me a one time passcode which has to be entered into the browser. Nothing other than that though.
I haven't had the Prime phone calls but my mum has and I can imagine her being sucked in quite easily.

dany174 · 30/07/2020 22:50

Whenever a company calls you when you weren't expecting them to just say "I will look into it and call you back", no actual company will have a problem with you calling them back. Then call them back on the number on their website not the number they called you with, customer service should be able to pass you along to the right department or give you the right number to call.
