Must be their optimum conditions today to release their princes and princesses!
Here in South Yorkshire it is very warm and very still and there are thousands flying and crawling around.
I don't mind them as they are good for the garden but I'm keeping a coaster over my wine glass 😁

@Borderstotheleftofme Karma
I respect the ants and they appear to respect me and my plants. Maybe I've just got overly lovely ones (I do find them quite cute)

😂
I was vegetarian for a long time and never harmed anything, couldn’t stand the thought of pest control etc.

I moved here (the ants seem to be particularly large in number here) and after numerous ant home infestations and chewed up electrical cords (which could have caused a fire) due to rats that I tried to ‘deter’ because i couldn’t handle killing them, I’ve come to realise that sometimes ‘control’ is necessary.

My garden is very biodiverse and organic which I always thought would be enough, natural predators, balance etc until I moved here to ant central..

no, but here (South Coast) we had an outbreak a couple of weeks back. Some kind of birds zooming round to eat them on the wing. Swifts?

Yes, went for a walk about 5.45 this evening and ended up wallking through a plague.
Horrible.

How do flying ants know it is flying ant day (or flying ant Day 2 as it appears to be this year - though we didn't see any on Flying Ant Day 1). Were today's Flying Ants in a different WhatsApp Group ?

Mine are out today. They seem a bit pathetic though - many attempts of flight that didn’t turn in to much.

Little bastards have found their way inside a corner of my house though - they got Raided Envy

Lancashire - found a lovely teeming mass of a nest in the garden today that included regular ants, flying ants, and loads of woodlice that the ants seemed to be devouring. They were all literally pouring out of a crack in the patio Confused. Grim.

I had thousands in my garden, no exaggeration! They were all along the borders. My 3 year old was mesmerised by them.

We had Flying Ant Day on Monday. Dd was mesmerised so the walk home from nursery took about 6 hours.

@Flymetothetoon

I don't mind if they farm the aphids, just know that my fruits in the greenhouse are growing superbly and I've never ever been bitten/stung by an ant. They are welcome on my patch 😁

They were farming on my tree and forget me nots, a couple of years ago. Trued to pull up the forget me nots, when the flowers had finished, and still have the itchy scars from the resulting bites.

Yes unfortunately, usually only one day a year. Now they have been twice.

Day of the Ants as we call it was yesterday for us (w London) but for some reason it seemed to be 90% tiny ants - ? - with just the odd one or two larger (usual) kind. It took me a while to cotton on as I thought they were little flies. Dh seemed to think it's not unusual for there to be different sizes, don't know much about it really. Iirc it can take 24hrs for the whole thing to take place (from the first appearance to the last stragglers) but they were only around for maybe an hour.

Yes, every year the ants find new ways into our home the first year was in the kitchen. (sealed all the cracks) the next year was I. Our dining room coming through the radiator pipes and skirting boards (ant killer).
Then last year the ants came up through the little cupboard on the fireplace, ant killer didn't work, sealing the cracks in the wall didn't work, I had to hoover up the disgusting things up everyday until they eventually went away.

They were back again this year in the same spot and I just grabbed some duct tape and sealed off the little door and that stopped them, I haven't seen them for a month in the house now I'm scared to remove the tape as I could get a flood of ants spill out or millions of dead ant body's

I have this too. it seems to be the wall that separates the living room from the kitchen. It normally starts out as just ants but if not dealt with then it turns into flying ants.

It always seems to be gaps in the skirting boards and round the door frame. Fill one gap they find another. Best thing to use is acrylic as it seals it permanently. I also put down ant powder which stops them immediately.

We found some outside and put the powder down, the little buggers then starting coming from behind the washing machine, more bloody powder. But it stopped them.

I dont mind them in the garden but i hate them in the house.

Well today none so they have obviously dispersed and done their thing.
Did find a drowned dragonfly in the pond though this morning 😢
