I have an entire weekend to myself. What book should I read?

DCs are with exH this weekend and I have deliberately made no plans other than to sit on my arse and read a book in the garden whilst drinking gin

Need book recommendations though, something really gripping that I can just lose myself in. Any suggestions? I'm easy when it comes to genre, although for some reason I seem to prefer books set in more recent years rather than anything historical.

Thanks in advance Wine

The Goldfinch
Girl Woman Other
Small Island
The Muse
The Wolf Hall trilogy
The Book of Strange New Things
Any book by David Sedaris

Another vote for Where the Crawdads Sing

Also American Dirt

And if you want a saga - A Little Life

NeedToKnow101 · 31/07/2020 13:34

Don't read a Little Life!!! It's horrible and depressing and takes forever to read.

I love threads like these! Just added a good few months worth of reading to my watch list!
If your reading and drinking gin I recommend posh crisps and mature cheddar!

Newpuppymummy · 31/07/2020 17:59

I loved a little life

4forkssake · 31/07/2020 18:06

4forkssake · 31/07/2020 18:06

Sod not did Hmm

NeedToKnow101 · 31/07/2020 19:54

@4forkssake 😂😂😂

stoneysongs · 31/07/2020 20:25

Another vote for The Goldfinch
And if you like nature / birds, Greenery by Tim Dee, beautiful (non fiction).

NeedToKnow101 · 31/07/2020 20:32

I also liked Station 11 and Reservoir 13. Two very different books though!

Another vote for Rachel’s holiday. I’ve just reread the all of the Marian keyes Walsh family books but Rachel’s holiday is my favourite.

Any Marian keyes book is my drinking gin in the garden go to but her newest one Grown Ups is particularly good.

Lianne Moriarty is another good bet, loved all of her books except Truly madly guilty - couldn’t get into that at all.

She

Or

The ex girlfriend

Read them both in a day 😍

Harriedharriet · 31/07/2020 21:07

How To Be Both - Ali Smith

or

Silence of the Girls - Pat Barker

midsomermurderess · 31/07/2020 21:11

The Mirror and the Light. It's the last in Mantel's Tudor trilogy.

cherrybakewells3 · 31/07/2020 21:36

I've just started reading one called the perfect couple. It's a thriller and seems good so far. I've also spent most of the weekend chilling in the garden

cherrybakewells3 · 31/07/2020 21:36

Day not weekend 🙄

RickOShay · 31/07/2020 22:15

Burial Rites by Hannah Kent is very good. It’s based on a true story and set in Iceland, very atmospheric and moving. Similar to Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood, which is also good.
I also enjoyed The Silent Patient, I cant remember the author, but it was a good read, thriller but good.
One of my favourite ever books is Black Swan Green by David Mitchell, especially if you were a teen in the eighties. I also loved The Humans by Matt Haig.
Have a lovely weekend, would you like some snack suggestions too? Grin

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 31/07/2020 22:40

The Beekeeper of Aleppo. Absolutely beautiful.

EasilyDelighted · 31/07/2020 22:54

Another vote for Kate Atkinson - I love the Jackson Brodie books but haven't read the latest yet.

John Marrs - When you disappeared or The One.

Another no to Crawdads, I am persevering with it but it's going from bad to worse and don't think I'll bother finishing it.

I was gripped by Blood Orange but not quite sure why, it was intriguing but a somewhat unsatisfactory ending.

EggBoxes · 31/07/2020 23:00

Brothers by Ben Elton.

MsTSwift · 31/07/2020 23:02

The Dutch House by Anne Patchett is very good -the way a brother and sister cope into adulthood as the stepmother steals their house

Lie of the Land - couple from London whose marriage breaking up move to Devon very readable but intelligent

KittyMcV · 31/07/2020 23:07

Heart's Invisible Furies or Mutiny on the Bounty by John Boyne.

2littleguineas · 31/07/2020 23:12

I love these threads too.

Can't believe "The Thirteenth Tale" hasn't been mentioned yet.

DoctorTwo · 01/08/2020 01:25

I'm currently reading Career Of Evil by Robert Galbraith. It's beautifully written, as you'd expect from this author, loads of suspense and a psychotic killer.
If you want something totally original try Rant by Chuck Palahniuk. I read it in one sitting and loved it. It's not for everybody as it's a bit strange (understatement of the Day) but it's well written and has the weirdest way of time travel ever.
