Are you diabetic? Could I be diabetic?

MorrisZapp · 30/07/2020 09:42

49, healthy weight, no other health issues.

I'm thirsty all the time and I pee all the time. I hadn't considered diabetes until I googled it and it mentioned recurring thrush infections, I've battled thrush my entire adult life.

I don't have dizzyness or tingling or blurry vision.

Thinking I should get tested? Any thoughts?

Definitely speak to your Dr and get a HBA1C arranged.
But also be aware that things like travel insurance will be more expensive to arrange with a diabetic diagnosis.
But definitely get tested!

SimonJT · 30/07/2020 09:53

Any family history of diabetes? Are you a higher risk ethnicity?

How much do you drink a day? What do you drink? How quickly do you drink it? E.g regular sips or drinking fairly quickly.

Any change in your breath?

MorrisZapp · 30/07/2020 09:55

Argh I hadn't considered that. Would it affect life insurance too? I'm not sure my symptoms would warrant medical intervention, I thought maybe looking at my diet etc might be enough. Thanks for the heads up.

It shouldn’t effect life insurance too much if you’re already insured.

MorrisZapp · 30/07/2020 09:58

Simon no there's no diabetes in my family and we're celtic of Scandinavian descent.

I haven't noticed any breath changes. I sip very hot decaffeinated tea, I probably have five large mugs in my working day.

I get up at least once a night to pee, and wake up very thirsty every day.

I'd say that you could very well be diabetic.
I was like this when I was around you age, peeing more and very thirsty.
This is the body's way of getting you to drink in order to flush the excess glucose out of your system.
I saw my GP and ,following a blood test, was put on medication.
Definitely get tested OP.

My son has T1 diabetes and his travel insurance is easy to arrange and costs approximately ten to twenty pounds per trip.

Toilet Tired Thirsty Thin are the things to look out for.

It is definitely worth getting checked, left untreated diabetes is a life threatening illness. However with proper management it doesn’t have to be the end of life as you know it. First step is the test though, I think some pharmacy offer it.

Five mugs of tea isn’t a great deal, decaf also has caffeine. The general rule is one litre of water per 25kg of mass on a normal (lazy and not hot) day.

Just a urine dip test at the Drs would give an idea to start with, it will tell you if there are ketones in the urine. Diabetes affects the whole body, all the organs , don't ignore it because left untreated it will cause damage.

MorrisZapp · 30/07/2020 10:03

I keep thinking of lovely Sue Townsend who lost her sight to diabetes. Thanks for the advice everyone, I think I will arrange a test.

I'm due a sight test BTW, can an optician spot diabetes at all?

OP posts:
Runmybathforme · 30/07/2020 10:04

Yes, you must get tested immediately. If you have untreated diabetes, it’s damaging your body every day. Good luck OP.

BovaryX · 30/07/2020 10:04

OP,
Can you buy a blood glucose machine in a pharmacy and do a finger prick blood test? That will give you a sugar reading. If you do a fasting blood sugar test, that will show if you have elevated blood sugar readings. Thirst is a symptom of Type 1 diabetes, I don't know much about Type 2, but I imagine it is also a symptom of that. A fasting blood test will tell you. I wouldn't delay and would try to establish or rule out this diagnosis asap

MovingTowardsANewPositivity · 30/07/2020 10:20

Yes, I am a diabetic and the raging thirst/peeing a lot is a sign of elevated blood glucose levels, as is continual bouts of thrush.

Definitely speak to your GP, who should arrange either a glucose tolerance test (not sure if this is just if you're pregnant though?) or a fasting blood test to check your blood glucose levels. Even a urine dip test can be used as a first step.

If you can't get in to see your GP quickly, then if you know someone diabetic you could ask to use their finger prick glucose monitor and test yourself to see what your levels are (use a clean (new) lancet each time and wash and dry your hands thoroughly beforehand Smile). You can then check 'normal' (non-diabetic) levels online and compare your results.

Or you could buy a glucose monitoring/testing kit at a pharmacy/online - bear in mind that the strips are quite expensive though! You could try and get some urine testing strips instead but I don't know if you can buy these over the counter or how much they cost.

In the meantime, try and increase the water you drink, and try and walk more, especially after eating a meal. For the thrush, cotton underwear, no tights or tight trousers, no highly perfumed soaps or bath oils and try and go commando at home as much as possible!

Good luck! As others have said it's important to get this checked as soon as possible, it's unlikely you would have the more severe symptoms unless your sugars had been high for a long time - eg if my sugars are very high I feel very sleepy and can't stay awake and my vision goes a bit blurry. Conversely, now I am well controlled my eyesight has actually improved and my glasses are less strong!

It's a lot to get your head around at first if you do find out you are diabetic but it is possible to get it under control (mostly) and decrease the possible side effects and affect it has on your life Smile.

MovingTowardsANewPositivity · 30/07/2020 10:21

PS if you do do your own finger prick tests use the side of your fingertip (not the pad) as it hurts less!

MorrisZapp · 30/07/2020 10:26

Thanks everyone, much appreciated.

5 large mugs of tea and that's it all day?

You may or may not be diabetic, that's not unreasonable to drink.

FWIW i drink around 3-4l of water a day, and coffee. I'm not diabetic! Also usually get up once a night to wee.

MorrisZapp · 30/07/2020 10:33

Today I will monitor exactly how much I drink. I have about five big cups in my working day, then various teas and other drinks in the evening. I take a cold drink to bed to sip when I wake in the night.

OP posts:
LockdownLoser · 30/07/2020 10:36

I don’t actually think you are drinking enough hence the thirst and caffeine is a diuretic hence the pee. Better to check though.

MorrisZapp · 30/07/2020 10:44

I'm really sensitive to caffeine, I only have two cups of normal tea per day, and I have them early on otherwise I can't sleep. The rest is non caffeine.

You have to remember though decaffe still contains caffeine, just lower levels, so decaffe should still be limited to before 3pm.
Deathraystare · 30/07/2020 14:59

I suspected I was for a long time even though the dr said no. It got worse (I pee all the time and am extremely thirsty) a visit to a Danish friend, proved the point. She had a diabetic dog and I used one the those sticks.

I went back to the doctors. I told her I was always thirsty and pee'd a lot plus I told her about the diabetic test stick for the dog that I used. She seemed to think that was funny.

Anyway . I am deffo diabetic and now on meds. (My pee even smells sweet).

Mermaido · 30/07/2020 15:11

I have same issues but don’t have diabetes. I stopped drinking tea and it made such a difference.
Also I have an autoimmune disease which causes my dry mouth, is that a possibility?
