Calories surplus - Fat?

I have been in a calorie deficit for about a year or aiming for a deficit anyway. I have lost weight which was the aim and am not a healthy weight.

I have started training with a PT now and my goal with him is to build strength, change my body composition from slim but high body fat low muscle, to slim with good muscle mass.

So he has me lifting weights, mostly machines so far. I use free weights in the gym with my friend and I am keeping up cardio twice a week for health and fitness. So far so good.

Well whilst I am happy with my weight, it’s irrelevant anyway, I still have a bit of fat to lose.

To build muscle though the PT wants me to eat in a small calorie surplus. Now this sounds stupid but I am panicking a little, eating in a surplus is what got me fat in the first place. But I do trust him that I need extra calories to build muscle.

Anyway to the point- if I am eating in a surplus, and those extra calories are used to build muscle, what happens to the fat that I already have, does it just stay there? So the muscle will be under this layer of fat?

It sounds crazy but honestly trust your pt. it’s called a ‘bulk’ phase. The extra calories help you build muscle mass. After a period of time doing this you will go back into a deficit, lose fat and reveal a toned and defined body! Trust the process Smile

Thanks, it’s just such a scary thought after all this time in a deficit. I have never actively tried to build muscle before so it’s all new to me.

Do you have Instagram? If you do give chloe Madeley a follow. She talks about these things all the time, I’ve found her very useful and informative!
