My c-section incision keeps gushing blood and the doctors insist it’s normal?

I had a c-section 9 days ago and it went fairly smoothly, I lost 1200 ml of blood but they didn’t seem hugely concerned and I was discharged the following day.

All was fine until I got out of the shower on Friday and my incision gushed blood, it was pouring down my legs onto the floor. I phoned maternity triage in a panic and they told me to keep an eye on it and only come in if it got any worse which it did, it gushed and poured again later that day so I went in. The doctor had a look and said it looked absolutely fine with no signs of infection so he wasn’t concerned (he did take swabs which came back clear). He sent me home with precautionary antibiotics and some gauze to put on the wound.

Yesterday morning it gushed again, it was pouring down my legs and all over the floor- it even sprayed at one point which terrified me. I went to triage again and this time the doctor told me to encourage it to bleed by lying on my stomach once a day and if I started to feel weak or dizzy, phone my GP Confused. She said it’s likely there are pockets of blood behind the incision which need to drain. I told my community midwife today and she said it was dangerous advice I definitely shouldn’t follow.

It gushed again when I stood up this evening. I never do anything crazy, it just randomly happens when I stand up to use the toilet usually. There’s always a puddle of blood on the floor when it happens and I’m starting to feel slightly fatigued and spaced out now...

I don’t know what to do in all honesty. Every doctor or midwife who looks at it says it looks normal and none of them can seem to figure out where the blood is even coming from but when it pours out it terrifies me.

This surely isn’t normal, does anyone know what I should do?

Go to A and E. Now.

frumpety · 29/07/2020 22:00

I think I would go to A&E , if you are passing a lot of bright red blood on a regular basis from your wound, and you are starting to feel different/unwell it makes sense to get checked.

Rockdown2020 · 29/07/2020 22:12

I’ve only had one c section but I did t have anything like this at all. Please go to A&E.

I’d be quite concerned about your care and you’re blood loss over time. You lost 1200No and then have kept losing more. I had a minor pph with my first and needed iron. My friend had a heammorage after a minor gyane procedure and nearly died because she wasn’t treated.

Babyboomtastic · 29/07/2020 22:22

Absolutely not normal, but a country mile. Are you sure they don't think that you're talking about lochia? My dressing came off after about 20hrs, and I had zero blood on it from that point. Not one drop. And surely with that sort of blood loss they should be monitoring you or giving you iron tablets?

I'd go to A&E tbh

BuntyCollocks · 29/07/2020 22:22

WTAF.

That is the worst advice I’ve ever heard.

You need to be readmitted to the postnatal ward. How did they close your wound? Was it disposable vicryl or prolene/staples?

I’ve never, EVER seen or heard of a c-section wound doing that. It’s ringing massive alarm bells for me. At the very least you need a pressure dressing on it, but this absolutely warrants thorough investigation on a ward.

Cam2020 · 29/07/2020 22:25

Not normal at all. My friend had this and was re-stitched.

BertieBotts · 29/07/2020 22:25

I feel woozy just reading this, you poor thing! It sounds horrendous.

mrsjg · 29/07/2020 22:28

I hope you're on your way to A&E to get this sorted.

PrincessForADay · 29/07/2020 22:38

That's not normal! Please call again and ask to be seen urgently

Billyjoearmstrong · 29/07/2020 22:43

Bloody hell OP.

I hope you are on your way to A&E.

2 sections here and Christ, I’d have been at A&E long before now. Such dangerous advice.

MrsTaytodarling · 29/07/2020 22:55

Midwife. Not normal. A&E now

TokyoSushi · 29/07/2020 22:59

Oh bless you, that sounds, awful, I'd agree with A&E. If by any chance you don't go, I know it would be hard but perhaps if you took a picture of the amount of blood they would see how serious it is.

But I agree you should go to A&E, hope you're sorted soon.

Estrellente · 29/07/2020 22:59

This happened to me after an EMCS and PPH. No one would listen until I showed them my blood soaked sheets. By then it was infected, I ended up with district nurses and daily dressing changes.
Make a fuss OP. Show them photos if you’ve got any.

Letmegetthisrightasawoman · 29/07/2020 23:04

Fucking hell, that's awful! A&E or 999 now I'd say. And if you have pictures show them. Can anyone come with you? They need to be told that this is not normal! I'd be quite arsey about it: "What's your name? I just need to know who to complain about if I bleed out overnight" etc. FWIW, I had a planned section and don't recall any blood around the wound.

hotstepper4 · 29/07/2020 23:06

No that's not normal!!!
My C section never bled at all.

You poor thing you must be so scared you really should go back to hospital. I hope you're ok

Lookyloo · 30/07/2020 00:23

Disgraceful treatment that you've received so far IMO.

allthewaterinthetap · 30/07/2020 03:02

No! Had a section, no significant bleeding from my wound after at all. Please go to A and E.
Ridiculous way women are dismissed, makes me so angry.

Lofari · 30/07/2020 03:13

3 sections here. My first bled a little, but nothing like you describe OP.
You need seeing urgently

AngelaScandal · 30/07/2020 03:55

Oh my gig you poor thing

AngelaScandal · 30/07/2020 03:55

*god

HagridsBackTeeth · 30/07/2020 04:10

Hope you are OK OP.
The dizziness could be a sign your blood levels are low. I would go to A+E.

Lindy2 · 30/07/2020 05:23

I had a slight bleed from my c section and the medical staff took it very seriously. It was much, much less blood than you are describing. Mine was caused by about 1cm of the wound not being lined up quite right. When that was corrected it stopped.

Please ring 111 with a view to going to a&e. Your wound should be well on the way to being healed now not bleeding profusely.

cheeseychovolate · 30/07/2020 05:59

Has your midwife discharged you yet, if not give them a call.?
