What the hell do I get for ds 9th birthday?!

What are your 9 year old boys in to?
I'm completely stuck as to what to get for ds birthday and I have 5 days!

He has a Nintendo switch, all accessories for it and plenty of games. He also has a fire tablet and he has a scooter and bike.
Hes also got lots of lego/knex/boom trix etc.

I'm at a complete loss! At this rate he's going to have a box set of books and a stupid farting keyring I picked up for a couple of quid because I knew it would make him laugh!

Help!.

Has he got an ozobot? That went down well with mine when he was ten.

RoryGilmoresEvilTwin · 28/07/2020 23:36

I should add that he also has no idea what he would like/need. I've asked him many times in many different ways what he would like but all hes mentioned is some new double ended colouring pens which I've ordered tonight.
He clearly has too much stuff but i can't let his birthday go by with next to no gifts.

The budget is around £300.
I save all year to buy his bday and xmas gifts but this year I have nothing to buy!

@labyrinthloafer
I've not heard of that. Thanks, I'll have a look.

A goal for the garden? A dartboard, slime kit, drum kit, guitar - or ukulele.

We bought ds10 a bike ramp to do tricks off of (he’s hardly used it though!).

How about a drone or a remote controlled car.

That’s all I got Grin

If you have Amazon prime then this so he can listen to music and watch prime kid shows and movies in his room. This is if you don’t allow tablets in bedrooms.

No point in spending £300 for the sake of it, better to save some u til there is something he actually wants!

Stuff my DS age 9 likes/has

Decent walkie talkies (about £20 on Amazon, not the cheapie character ones you find in toy shops)
Camo net for making dens
Real tool kit - child sized but actual tools plus a pack of balsa wood for making things
Lego Star Wars board game
Labo for Nintendo switch
Real fossils

Maybe a series of days out to fun places (once lockdown is over and places are properly open)

A slime kit is a good shout! I always say no because I hate the flipping stuff but I know he'd love it.
Unfortunately we don't have a garden but a drone is also a good idea. We could take it out and about.

Aldi that looks fab!

My 9 year old wanted a drone (I said no).

His favourite birthday presents were a bike/scooter ramp, Dobble and Lego.

RoryGilmoresEvilTwin · 28/07/2020 23:48

Brie £300 is definitely the upper end of the budget 🤣

I had thought of booking trips out but I'm worried about not being able to go and losing money/his gift, if that makes sense.

I love the tool kit and balsa wood idea! Thanks

Roller skates?

RoryGilmoresEvilTwin · 28/07/2020 23:49

A scooter ramp could be fun! He's always trying to do 'tricks' on it so I could see this being popular.

I am planning to get 9yo dd a hot wires electronics kit that was recommended by a friend.

bookmum08 · 28/07/2020 23:54

Spend £50 and put the £250 in a bank account for him.
He wants the pens. Maybe get some other pens to go with them - I got some neon ones made by crayola recently. Does he draw or do colouring? The Works sells loads of great colouring books - like Star Wars/Marvel type ones or the fancy pattern ones. They also sell lots of 'how to draw' books.
Does he read? Get the latest of his favourite writer.
Don't feel you have to spend the £300.

shellysheridan · 29/07/2020 00:01

Echo dot for his bedroom
Nice headphones
Fit bit
Wireless speaker

RoryGilmoresEvilTwin · 29/07/2020 00:04

Bookmum I think that could be the best idea actually. It's very easy to fall into the trap of buying for the sake of buying!

I've ordered the pens and also some smelly pens plus I have The Bolds book set by Julian clary for him.
He's a reader but I did get a bit book happy during lockdown so we're definitely not short of new reading material.

I think a ramp for his scooter is a brilliant idea so that will be got.
The rest of the birthday budget (sounds stupid but as a ft student/lp, money is very tight so I save religiously to afford bday and xmas gifts) will be put away for a day out at some point and the rest in his bank account.

Safetosay we have snap circuits which are very similar to hot wires i think.
Ds got the green energy set last xmas and it was a huge hit.

Shelly we already have an echo dot that we share and he has a fitbit that my mum got him for christmas.

He clearly doesn't need anything!

Dd turns 9 thus autumn and I'm planning on getti g her a (musical) keyboard and some "learn to play" type books. Oh and headphones Grin

pinkcattydude · 29/07/2020 00:18

We got DS a roll up drum kit (only works with headphones or speakersGrin) football kit as unfortunately he supports Chelsea and a some books he wanted. But I’m in the same boat this year I am stumped

RoryGilmoresEvilTwin · 29/07/2020 00:18

Hahaha definitely don't forget the headphones! Bernadette

Someone on here recommended Ultra Dash on amazon so I bought it for DS 8th birthday last week. It's brilliant and we had a little 'party' in a local field and all the kids loved it.

It's like a flashing relay stick that comes with 5 different colour holders and you place the holders in different places and they have to race to tag them all. The stick generated randomly which colour you have to run to next.

We had a family bbq and all the adults had several gos too!!!

CormoranStrike · 29/07/2020 07:10

A metal detector!

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 29/07/2020 07:12

DD really liked getting money from that age as she could spend it on the stuff I'd normally say no to (smiggle tat) perhaps not the whole budget but £50 is a fair whack for that age.

Any sports he does? Dds a swimmer and even a low range costume and goggles can be £70 and Swimzi is a sought after brand, although I've not forked out the £70 for the onesie she wanted.

Bmidreams · 29/07/2020 07:15

Does he need anything like a new bed? Get him an experience such as Go Ape or paddle boarding lesson and give him £50 cash. I think your budget is a lot, but I know we are all different.

BogRollBOGOF · 29/07/2020 07:57

It's surprisingly tricky! My 9 (and 7) yos are into pokemon.
DS2 had a birthday at Easter and fortunately I rushed into town a month before to get a build a bear Eevee, pokemon cards and some books. He later got a scooter upgrade, something I struggled to think about when it was pissing with rajn and the world threatening to imminently collapse around us. Grin

As for toys, mine still play with Duplo and wooden trains as well as Lego, which we have more than an abundance of. And sticks. They love sticks. It's not that they don't play, they just don't need mountains of new stuff to facilitate it.
