Job dilemma WWYD

NC and not disclosing actual job as niche and v outing.
Started new job about a year ago as a temp covering sick leave. Permanent posts came up, I applied and totally car crashed the interview. They appointed 2 new people; there were 3 jobs. based on that interview I was good enough to fill a staff shortage but not good enough to keep forever. There were a number of reasons I interviewed so badly. I’m sure I could do better given another chance, but not sure I could do so well to get a job in a particularly competitive place like this place. My temp job has been extended for 6 months, and looking at the team I’m pretty sure I’ll get another 6 months again out of it....there are a number of team members with chronic health problems who are always off sick and 2 team members who want sabbaticals next year. There are easily enough gaps for me to plod along for another year and then reapply for a permanent post that I know will be advertised in the next 12 months. There are no guarantees I’d get the job. This work place is 25 minutes from my house.
There is another job. Same pay, less busy, Much better organised institution, much less competitive, I have worked with the person who would be my boss Previously and we get on well. they haven’t managed to fill their posts because the location is slightly obscure. They will probably still have jobs in a year. It’s an hour away. I think I’d probably be happier There if I could get my head around a 2 hour round trip commute.
Would you sit it out in a job where you haven’t been given security (And have been turned down for a permanent post) just because it’s closer or go for a secure job further way?

What is the scope for progression at the other place?

I would go for the job I was happiest in. But I'm not one to shy away from a commute. I travel 3 hours each way to my office, 3 times a week, yes, that's 6 hours a day, work a full day in between. I work from home 1 day and I have off on Fridays (due to long hours). It suits me fine even with 2 small dc. It means I have a job I love with a good salary and good longterm job security. It also means we don't have to move (also very niche field, closest jobs to my actual home would be about 1.5 hours at a push, and we like where we live). The only consideration is if you have dc and how you and your partner, if you have one, will balance childcare between you.

I commute an hour+ each way and I think it’s a manageable distance (I’ve had a much longer commute). In my current job, I started with a 15 minute commute and moved to 1-1.5 hour commute when we bought our house. I don’t remember feeling tired increasing my commute but I’ve commuted for 1+ hour in my previous roles, so I might have been used onto it.

When you’re happy in your job, commuting is a lot easier. I’m not particularly looking forward to commuting 1+ hour again when we need to go back into work so I’m hoping they can allow working from home a few days a week. If this new place will allow working from home a few days a week, that’ll make your work life balance a bit easier.

@SuzieCarmichael scope for progression is possibly better at the more obscure location. But tbh I’m pretty much as high as I want to go anyway. It would take a lot to change my mindset that I want any further up the ladder.....it’s just a whole lot more responsibility for very little financial gain and a step further away from my core job.

@mindutopia DH would vote for the further away job- he thinks I’ve been treated abysmally in temp post. Re DC We have willing family close by, a house keeper (who would love her scope to Increase to childcare) andDC at a school that does ad hoc boarding, so childcare completely covered If required.

I would definitely go for the further away job. It’s a job you actually want to do and it’s only 35 minutes more each way than you do now and commuting can be quite nice for clearing your head depending how you’re travelling. Plus in a post COVID-19 era you’ll probably find you can arrange a level of working from home very easily so you won’t be doing it every single day.

Yellow1793 · 28/07/2020 21:53

This is not and will never be much scope for working from home. 80-90% of the job has to be on site.

Ok so if you think the other place would be more nurturing / emotionally fulfilling, and you can manage the practical side of the longer commute in terms of childcare etc, then I’d say go for that. What are your misgivings?

Yellow1793 · 28/07/2020 22:19

@SuzieCarmichael, no misgivings, just the commute. If they were both 30 minutes away I’d almost certainly go to the obscure location one.

Id go for the further away one, with the info you've given i cant really see any reason to stay in current role.
