What would be your perfect name for yourself?

Inspired by the baby names board, I wondered what names people would choose for themselves if they could? I have a slightly unusual, hard to spell name so always wanted a simple one. Maybe Emma Norfolk?

I use to want to be called antonia 😏

Chitlin · 28/07/2020 21:02

Rosevale Washington. Out of 'Jill's Pony Trek'. Alas I fear I'm more of a Mercy Dulbottle.

I loathe my first name. The accent where I live makes it sound really harsh and you can't shorten it nicely.

I'd like to be an Imogen, or a Naomi...something a bit arty and slightly unusual. (I'd also like to be a bit more arty and unusual so obviously the name would effect the change) When I was younger I wanted to be called Charlie. I liked the androgynous-ness.

WorriedMummy2020 · 28/07/2020 21:57

I like my name. It is often shortened, usually without checking with me, to another name which is also nice.
I would like to be called Rosa or Libby though. I love the name Clara too but not for myself.

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 28/07/2020 22:01

Oooh I love thinking about this! I have a very “70’s” first name combined with a fairly harsh sounding surname. I always wanted a pretty first name, ending in ‘ia’....something like Amelia or Anastasia...or something cool like Anais. For a surname I always wanted Aspinall or Donovan 😊 In reality I have something very different 🙄😂

TheOrchidKiller · 28/07/2020 22:13

I sort of like mine but I'm late 40s so I knew a lot of Claires & Sarahs & Julies. My DPs decided to be different & gave me a less popular name. It's often mis-spelt or mis-pronounced. My maiden name was mis-spelt & mis-pronounced. It was very wearing at school, correcting teachers.

I changed my surname when I got married, only to find that gets mis-spelt & mis-pronounced! I have to spell it out because they miss or add letters. For some inexplicable reason some people think my surname is my first name, even though it is not a first name! Sometimes I correct them & they still get it wrong.

So I think I would like to be called something like Laura Smith or Emma Jones, which I actually like.

It's too late to change it now though.

Thisisanillegalbingogame · 28/07/2020 23:29

I always used to think Stephanie was the height of glamour and sophistication in the 80s (not my name and I am neither glamorous or sophisticated) so that’s what I used to want to be called Smile

StillMedusa · 28/07/2020 23:33

I was a late 1960's Julie... always at least 3 in my class...
But somehow it got switched to Jules and that's fine...suits me better.

One of my teachers at school had the surname Fabian and I always quite fancied that (mine's boring and not as posh!)

Ponks · 28/07/2020 23:37

I'd love to be a Frances.
It feels pretty and delicate, and sophisticated, and I'm none of those things!

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 28/07/2020 23:37

I really like Liberty. Or Genevieve. I got one of the boring 70s names though and while I think it's quite pretty, I would prefer something that actually did serve its purpose as a method of identifying me as an individual.

ILoveAnOwl · 28/07/2020 23:41

Sarah Cavendish. Sarah to blend in and Cavendish because it's beautiful.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 28/07/2020 23:43

I love my first and surname (I don’t have a middle name)

I double barrelled my name when married and would do so again if I marry again

So shall keep my name

ladymary86 · 28/07/2020 23:53

I really really hate my name and always have.

I'd choose something simple like Beth. It's simple, a diminutive form on Elizabeth (lots of relatives with this name) and pretty much goes with any surname.

hugefanofcheese · 29/07/2020 01:16

I have come to love my name and would like to think it suits me- classic, quite elegant first name and a super-Yorkshire surname: think Isobel Arkwright or Eloise Barraclough.

I wouldn't mind something super- glam like Mercedes or Veronica though

VictoriousSockPuppet · 29/07/2020 01:23

VictoriousSockPuppet, obvs!

But in RL, I always wanted a name you could shorten/lengthen/do-things-with.

I wanted to be Elizabeth (liz, lizzie, beth, lizbeth, etc)
Recbecca (Becky, becca, bec, rebeck)
Annabel (Anna, annie, bell)

I have a one syllable name that you can't do anything with, except maybe add an -ie to at the end. Which is more of an effort.

I lived my life swearing I wouldn't do this to any child of mine.

DD has a one syllable name that you can't do anything with, except maybe add an -ie to at the end. I am horrible!

whysorude · 29/07/2020 01:23

Always thought Marilla/Rilla from Anne of Green Gables was such a pretty name.

Tavannach · 29/07/2020 01:26

Interesting question. My favourite girl's name for a DD is probably Frances nn Frankie, but if I was choosing for myself I'd go with something a bit more outré. Artemis probably. My own name is much plainer, not boring but not necessarily very memorable.

BruceAndNosh · 29/07/2020 01:27

I always wanted to be called Alexa when few people were familiar with the name.

Well, that's ruined.

baumwolle · 29/07/2020 01:30

Julia (but not Jules!)

Tillygetsit · 29/07/2020 03:50

Molly. I think it's friendly and.. er.. jolly!

Crumpets111 · 29/07/2020 03:52

I always wanted to called Eden, love the name!

LunaNorth · 29/07/2020 03:56

I don’t mind my name, but it really gives my age away. There are plenty of us, all of a similar vintage.

I’d prefer something timeless, but still quite cool. Something like Annie/Anna, Kate or Nina.

Livedandlearned · 29/07/2020 04:46

I too thought that Stephanie was a sophisticated name, and shortening it to Steph would be cool.

It's a lot longer than my own name and I get fed up of scrawling that all over paperwork in my job as it is.

Guineapigbridge · 29/07/2020 04:55

I'd love to be Jett. Very cool.
