Have anti depressants made you gain weight?

And if I come off them will I find it easier to lose weight or is the damage already done? I'm in a much better place than when I started taking them a year ago but am finding it very hard to shift my excess weight. Or could that also be because I'm in my 40s?

AD’s made hubby able to eat again so he put back weight that he had lost due to anxiety. He is no bigger than he was before his troubles began.

No, I lost a stone as I was no longer misery eating.

I put on 3 stone in 3 months on mirtazapine. I’ve lost it now (bar 3lb) but it’s been much harder to lose than previous weight gains. I’m also in my 40s.
I’ve been on other ADs previously and didn’t have this problem.

I gained over 2 stone on citalopram. Heaviest I've ever been. Weaned myself off it and jointed weight watchers and lost it all

Roblakeswife · 30/07/2020 08:51

I was on citalopram years ago about 8 years ago and it gave me the boost to exercise and sort my life out. Had pnd. Went back on it last year, still have no motivation to do anything (unlike last time) and am the heaviest I've ever been and still comfort eat. Journey do you think coming off helped the weight come off as well as joining WW or in my case is the damage already done? I'm 42.

I also wonder if they have contributed to my increased appetite, which I didnt need!

Yes mirtazapine was dreadful for the weight gain. It is a known side effect for it though.

I am on amitriptyline which is an AD but taking it for sleep problems and put on nearly 3 stone in months. Ive had a PT for 4mths, do IF on 2 meals a day and nothing will shift the excess weight.

Finally had enough of feeling miserable about my weight. I'm halving my dose to try and ween myself off it to see if it helps. Will need to find an alternative so I can sleep though.

Dr Google says that 50% of people who take it stop taking it due to weight gain.

I wish doctors were honest about potential side effects before they prescribed meds

Leostar · 30/07/2020 09:09

Has anyone else seen any substantial weight loss after stopping and how long did it take?
