Threadworms - unbelievable!

Evening
Just given child mebendazole.
They were back in school for 3 weeks of 2 days only.
Has been nit and worm-free in lockdown.
Started symptoms yesterday but only told me today.
If life cycle is only 14 days that takes us to ingestion of eggs on Sunday 12th July and we haven't been anywhere.

Where could he have picked them up from?

School now closed - should I email teacher regardless?

Will GP accept my confirmation on phone and send a prescription or will they insist on a sodding photo/tape test? (I have used Ovex I had in medicine cabinet but only had enough for one tablet each)

Have dosed up whole family now. Do we take second tablet on the 10th August or 9th if his symptoms actually began yesterday?
Thanks in advance x

They could have had them for ages before showing symptoms. You can buy ovex over the counter without a prescription

RedCatBlueCat · 28/07/2020 08:29

Take the tablets 14 days apart. The timing is to disrupt the life cycle, not to do with symptoms.

I'd guess he got them from school, and the 14 days is approximate.

Why do you need your gp?!!!

My kids have worms regularly (nail biters Angry). The eggs can go everywhere, and be picked up outside from grass etc.

I keep Ovex in the cupboard now. Take a dose two weeks apart, whole family. Wash and hoover everything thoroughly.

TinySleepThief · 28/07/2020 08:35

Do people really go to the GP for this? Surely you just go to the pharmacy and buy tablets? Take 2 tablets 14 days apart and clean everything thoroughly.

msbevvy · 28/07/2020 08:38

Threadworms are one of the treatments available under the minor ailments scheme. The whole family will need to be treated.

Scarby9 · 28/07/2020 08:40

No need for GP. Just go to the chemist and get enough for the whole family.

CoraPirbright · 28/07/2020 08:59

Boots sell various pills for this! Why on earth would you go to the GP?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 28/07/2020 09:58

This indicates why there should be a charge to see a GP and no free prescriptions. You can get medication for this from any pharmacy.

HelminthHellNo · 28/07/2020 14:28

Hi - thanks for the help
I am well aware Ovex is available over the counter hence me having some already in the cupboard. I am furloughed until the end of August only. If I can get a prescription I will as I am making savings where I can (my furlough pay is bare minimum - gig economy - and it is unlikely there will be much work from Sept).
Our GP is closed - locums do a telephone appointment - you send a photo of the ailment then they send prescription direct to the pharmacy. Ordinarily in normal times, yes, I would go directly to Tesco but in normal times I would be earning.

Does your chemist run a minor ailments scheme where you can access treatments like this if you (or your child) are entitled to free prescriptions?

dotdashdashdash · 28/07/2020 14:32

HelminthHellNo Go to chemist on the minor ailments scheme - if you (or your child) normally gets free prescriptions anything the pharmacist prescribes will also be free.

HelminthHellNo · 28/07/2020 14:34

Ah thank you msbevvy Flowers - never heard of this scheme but looking at it now.

You can just buy the medication onkune, or go to your pharmacist and they will give you it on prescription. I was told you only need 1 dose now, but j don't trust that so get one from the chemist and buy one. You take the medication 2 weeks after the first dose, so if you take it today, you take the next dose Tuesday after next.

HelminthHellNo · 28/07/2020 14:44

So the local chemist has minor ailment service listed on their website - am going to call them now.Thank you for that info as I had no idea such a scheme existed.
Should I let the school know do you think, as it is likeliest DC picked them up from there despite their deep cleaning threadworms clearly need to be retold social distancing rules Wink
Also, anyone any idea why threadworms are so prevalent here compared with other European countries? I read something like 40% which would equate to 9 kids in a class Shock
