Holiday cottage has WiFi but requests no streaming ,no Netflix,no U tube

The request is because it would use too much data .
Is it just me or is this unusual ? Don't most people have unlimited data on their home wifi ?

I'm not au fait with all this so perhaps I'm misjudging .

Legally I don't think you can use a home broadband package in a commercial property and commercial broadband is expensive.

Saucery · 27/07/2020 20:50

Is it shared with other properties? We stayed at one where there was a row of cottages so you were sharing with the main house and 2 other properties and were asked not to stream or use too much.

Fanthorpe · 27/07/2020 20:52

Yep, they’re cheapskates. If it’s advertised with WiFi you should be able to fill your boots.

Unless you’re in a remote area, where it’s poor access?

I recently stayed somewhere which had that restriction because it only had a dongle using 4G mobile signal. Some places can’t get decent wired broadband.

Reallybadidea · 27/07/2020 20:55

It's unusual IME and you should be made aware in advance imo. We had similar where it turned out that we were limited to a certain amount of data over the week (pretty paltry amount) and had to pay extra if we wanted more - fair enough, but we would never have booked it if we'd known in advance. Fortunately dh has unlimited mobile data and we set up a hot-spot.

TreacherousPissFlap · 27/07/2020 20:57

In the arse end of nowhere I would expect this (if it was advertised beforehand) Otherwise I would be incandescent with rage annoyed and would be lodging a complaint.
Generally you go away and expect at least the level of comfort you have at home (unless backpacking etc)

peridito · 27/07/2020 21:00

It's one of two cottages next to the main house where the owner lives .

It's rural and apparently the 4G is better than the broadband .

Is it more a question of demand on the wifi ( ?bandwidth is it called ) than using data do you think ?

I'm just trying to understand so that I can figure out the implications .There are 3 of us ,one with a smart phone ,one with an I Pad and one with a laptop .We use the latter with our hub at home .

TimeWastingButFun · 27/07/2020 21:06

Eh? So they advertise the WiFi but you can really use it? They are being very unreasonable!!

Saucery · 27/07/2020 21:06

I think it probably is demand on the WiFi, yes. But if the 4g signal is ok then you could use the phone as a hotspot, maybe?
I’m not very technical though and blank out the moans from people in the household about dodgy internet because apparently I am ‘mean and uncaring’ Grin

AlecOrAlonzo · 27/07/2020 21:08

Ime it will just be too slow to be able to get anything streamed except radio or podcasts etc. You can look at social media and email but it probably won't work beyond that.

P0lka · 27/07/2020 21:10

If it's anything like my neighbours set up (sounds like it! Rural area, multiple properties using same router, thick walls!) the signal is too poor for too many people to use it at once. Idle munsnetting and googling = fine, but one person streaming things strangles then network for everyone else

peridito · 27/07/2020 21:11

OK ...the member of our party (DS) with a smart phone did say something about a hotspot .

It's him I'm concerned for ,I don't particularly want the wifi to be poor as it's important to him and it is meant to be a holiday for all three of us .

OP posts:
Highlandcathedral · 27/07/2020 21:12

If it’s rural it may well be that they can only get very slow internet. We are also rural, and until very recently could only get rubbish speed internet, as there was no fibre to our hamlet. So I once attempted to download a bbc programme and it predicted it would take 2 days!

Thank goodness we have had fibre just recently and can download what we want. I’d upgrade your 4g package so you can use your phone as a hotspot.

Youngatheart00 · 27/07/2020 21:12

I doubt it’s a being stingy with data issue, more likely a bandwidth issue in the area. As others have said it’ll probably be fine for emailing / WhatsApp etc etc but not for streaming. Could you download a few box sets onto your tablet(s) using your hols broadband before you go?

peridito · 27/07/2020 21:15

Yes I think DS is on to that ,DP not so much . And it won't be a problem I think for me .

OP posts:
Ginkypig · 27/07/2020 21:17

It sounds like they are likely using a wifi extender or something similar from their own home broadband to cover the two cottages so there households using the one wifi/broadband.

Personally I wouldn't be happy though, I watch Netflix in the evenings when I'm staying somewhere as I'm not out at the pub etc and quite often away alone, I understand not gaming or downloading but not watching Netflix

Cherylina · 27/07/2020 21:19

Is it just me who thinks a break from the internet would actually be no bad thing..?

Aragog · 27/07/2020 21:21

Cherylina - it can be for some people, for others Wi-Fi whilst away is important for a range of reasons.
Not everyone needs a holiday to 'get away from' Wi-Fi and internet.

Letsnotusemyname · 27/07/2020 21:22

Technically correct - you do have broadband.

However its a bit like advertising parking and you can only just squeeze a smart car into the space.

mindutopia · 27/07/2020 21:23

We do not have unlimited data on our wifi (rural area, horrible broadband speed, you can't even watch netflix on it). So we have to get a mobile data package. I forget actually how much data we get, but we have two boxes (because we run out of one and it's cheaper to have another than to buy the top up). It costs about 100 quid a month - if we don't run out. We have easily spent up to 200 a month before. It's very expensive. But I think it's a bit silly of them to expect people to police themselves because I imagine people just watch YouTube all they want and ignore it.

EasilyDelighted · 27/07/2020 21:26

This is still quite common in rural areas, we don't tend to stream much so it doesn't really affect us but we assume it will be poor unless we're in a town.

peridito · 27/07/2020 21:26

And apparently the TV doesn't like being left on standby and won't work if it is . So I feel a little concerned ,like Ginky we won't be out in the pub in the evenings .

I am taking Monopoly etc ,hopefully it'll be ok . We'll be fine I know .I just like to understand things and be prepared .

Though I wouldn't have booked had I known in advance .

Wheresthebiffer2 · 27/07/2020 21:26

Welcome to my life. Where I live we have very limited broadband. It's okay for checking emails, and using Facebook, but NOT okay for streaming, netflix or U-tube.

We also have no mobile reception. None whatsoever! So people's sat-navs don't work, or phones, so just using your data is not an option for us here. We're in an official Not-Spot. Darkest beyond Highlands.

BearySad · 27/07/2020 21:29

You could download programmes on Netflix & IPlayer before you go.

howfarwevecome · 27/07/2020 21:29

Ugh. That sucks, especially as entertainment options in a lot of areas are limited right now.
