Jaw Surgery Clinics - Please Help

Sorry to post this here, I couldn’t find a section that covers this.

After years of trying to get my underbite fixed (mum didn’t want me getting surgery when younger, then told by NHS to wait until all IVF treatment etc completed) I’m now looking to get surgery ASAP.

The NHS waiting lists are so long, and surgery in my area seems to have halted due to CV. Does anyone know of a private clinic where I could pay to have this done? We are in Sussex, so I know I could go to London but the back and forth travel for orthodontics involved, combined with a full time job and small children would be a nightmare logistically.

I’d be eternally grateful for suggestions, as Google has this far failed me!

Just did quick google these work in nhs Western Sussex hospital
Peyman Alam
Farzad Borumandi
Satish Madhavarajan
Stephen Walsh
Alan Wilson

Most nhs do private consultations
The first one on list does weds @ Nuffield Health Chichester ? Near you?

uglyface · 27/07/2020 16:55

@granadagirl Thank you for replying! I tried all the Nuffields in the area (Chichester is too far, we’re near Tunbridge Wells/Kent border) and got nos. BUPAs were a no too.

I don’t suppose you happen to know how it works re private consultations? When I Googled I got a list of consultants who work in the main QVH hospital for the NHS but also do private consultancy....however I’m not sure how that works for surgeries. Surely you have to have a private hospital available in order to do that?

Sorry for my ignorance, I’m new to the land of private medicine beyond IVF!

Would your dentist be able to recommend somewhere? Sorry, I can't help, but having had jaw surgery I shall wish you all the best with it! X

Hi
The reason I said look at nhs hospital near you is that nearly all consults in all fields do private consultations elsewhere

So you google the name of consultant you like the sound off
Say dr Pamela Shaw
It will come up with nhs hospital and there private consulting room ie private hospital or private rooms

See where else he he/she works privately and ring the number of private practice. They normally have a secretary
So you ask how much a consultation cost with .......,
and do the do surgery for (what your problem is)
Depending on answer and consultation price usual anything between £200-300

Most consultants after consultation with them, may add you to there nhs list

If you go ahead for consultation you need referral letter from your gp

@granadagirl Thank you for your advice. My dentist is very, very old school and says that I shouldn’t be referred for a cosmetic issue as I have no trouble eating or talking. Now that I have dates for our final IVF (for second child, delayed due to CV) I can start to plan ahead, so have an appointment with a private orthodontist tomorrow to see if they can point me in the right direction.

@Yellredder Any tips/advice? I’ve never met anyone in my life like me!

Hey good luck with ivf x

PaperMonster · 27/07/2020 18:54

@uglyface I had a top overbite. My lower jaw was receding and I was told that by the time I got into my 50s I’d struggle with eating (I was already having problems biting and avoided certain foods). I had my bottom jaw broken on both sides and reset. It isn’t as painful as it sounds, but you get very swollen and it is uncomfortable. Soup becomes your main food!! Wide straws are better than thin ones - to drink your soup! Chocolate buttons can be posted through the little gap and one takes about an hour to melt on your tongue Grin I got the hospital equivalent of Calpol, but reacted badly to the artificial sweeteners so ended up on effervescent paracetamol - which is disgusting!! I was supposed to have six weeks off work, but had months in the end!!

PaperMonster · 27/07/2020 18:55

*five months.

BananasinPJ · 27/07/2020 19:15

Kenneth Sneddon in spire hospital tunbridge wells does orthognathic surgery

I dont know if its surgey they do there but you could try?

RedElephants · 27/07/2020 19:29

I guess if you aren't able to travel, this won't be much help, however might be worth a thought..
The Luton & Dunstable, Bedfordshire (The L&D) is, I believe, a Maxillofacial hospital, they did/do specialise in that particular field, they are also a University Hospital.

uglyface · 27/07/2020 20:12

Thank you SO much everyone - @granadagirl you are a wealth of knowledge and @BananasinPJ I will absolutely look into the Spire, that’s very local.

@RedElephants I could travel for the surgery (my mum would have to come and stay for a few weeks anyway to help out with my daughter/any siblings) but it’s the orthodontics beforehand - lots of appointments, I’m told.

@PaperMonster For years I have considered myself a freak, don’t use mirrors etc....I know yours was overbite rather than under but it’s nice to hear of people who have managed to get the surgery done. That bit doesn’t bother me, it’s more the pre surgery orthodontics that stresses me out. I’m a teacher, so need to be able to enunciate clearly; huge amounts of metalwork in my mouth for two years prior could really affect my ability to teach phonics....I’m English lead at my school too, so it’s my specialism.
