Feel a wee bit guilty

I accidentally shoplifted a carton of milk Hmm I had it stuffed in the trolley by the babys car seat and didn't realise I hadn't put it on the converbelt with the rest of the shopping until I got back to the car and was getting the baby out. If it hadn't been pissing with rain I would've gone back in to pay for it but id already put the baby in the car and couldn't be bothered faffing about in the rain to go back in to pay for it.
I got home and told ds12 what happened. He said next time you go to the shop you can tell them what happened and pay for it.... But I don't think I will. Would you?

I've done this exact thing a couple of times. I'm ok with it

My son accidentally picked up a box of Mr kiplings from the till at Iceland. They weren't ours, they were by the till because they were reduced.

We've never let him live it down.
When we see an Iceland van he hides.

I bought a hamster plus cage, accessories and food etc from pet city. The cashier was really chatty, and carefully taped ”sold by pet city” over the cage, food sack and bagged the rest up. Still chatting because he was giving me care advice I paid by card, said a cheery goodbye and went home. When I got home he had only charged for the hamster.

I didn't go back.

I wouldn't go back as a special journey but I'd definitely put it right the next time I was in or if this wasn't feasible for some reason I'd give the same figure to a charity. Because I'm pleased to not be a thief, even accidentally. And it's the little things that make us who we are.

I forgot to scan a pack of tortilla chips and a tub of Pringles a few weeks back (the queue for the tills was going past them so I wanted to get in and out as quickly as possible). Only realised when I was looking at the receipt to work out how much son owed me for his picnic Grin

I couldn't face going back to explain... so the following week when buying Pringles and tortilla chips for a barbecue I discreetly scanned the packets twice.

Anyone who says stealing, however accidentally, is more acceptable than being honest: shame on you

This thread is sad. Your son is right. Leave the extra cash by the till if you're reluctant to give an explanation.

It's thieving. Yes by accident and yes £2 for milk or whatnot isn't a large amount of money but I doubt you'd be all fine with it if a colleague at work took £2 from your handbag.

Just because the victim is a shop rather than a person doesn't make it ok.

Delbelleber · 27/07/2020 23:45

It's tesco, a massive chain shop. The cost of milk is pennies to them and can't be compared to a colleague at work. No one's feelings are hurt here. I'll be more careful in future.

I dont feel bad anymore (OK a tiny bit) and I know of people who shop lift for fun so I really don't think I have anything to feel bad for.

It doesn't matter if it's pennies, they will pass that cost on to the customer who may not have a lot of pennies. Feel how you like but consider donating to charity.
