Does Buffy the Vampire Slayer get a bit silly?

Yes, I know it’s silly from episode 1. But does it get ridiculous? Is it worth persevering with?

I must have watched a few back in the day as I knew who everyone was etc, but I never really watched it. Recently started watching from S1E1. I’m now on season 3 where Angel has just come back and it’s all going very woolly. Then I read ahead a few episode descriptions and just though ‘eh!? That sounds daft’

Should I stick with it? Or has the best already been?

Thanks!!

Was totally obsessed with Buffy as a kid, have rewatched a few times. I still love it Blush

It was always pretty bad. I dont really understand the recent love in.

notheragain4 · 26/07/2020 22:35

Oh I love Buffy, I'm not sure what I'd think of it watching for the first time as an adult, I watched it as a teenager, but I rewatched it recently and loved it all the more. It was pretty ground breaking in a lot of ways, covers a lot of the usual teenage moral dilemmas but via monsters instead! I remember preferring seasons 1-3 when younger but I appreciated 4-7 more as an adult. I think it's worth persevering but I'm probably biased with nostalgia!

Season 1 is a bit silly. It gets more mature and dark as the seasons go on. Persevere!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/07/2020 22:38

Although season 4 is one of the worst in my opinion so you might not like what's coming Grin

nocoolnamesleft · 26/07/2020 22:40

I'm loving the rerun. Maybe I'm immature.

ShinyFootball · 26/07/2020 22:41

I didn't like Riley but the end of S4 killing the main baddy was great

MissKittyFantastico84 · 26/07/2020 22:41

Depends what you mean by silly! It started out quite formulaic- each ep was a different baddie, sort of a stand alone type thing. But then as it developed, so did the relationships, issues covered and yeah, the 'mythology'. To be honest, nowadays all the Angel stuff makes me cringe. It gets way better when Spike and Oz and Faith turn up. Buffy will always be my favourite show ever. Nothing else like it!! Stick it out, it's worth it. Smile

cottonandcalico · 26/07/2020 22:44

I really enjoy it in a nostalgic and "easy watching" kind of way. I'm also in love with Spike so that helps Grin I never rewatch the final season though, its woeful.

NotDavidTennant · 26/07/2020 22:45

If anything it tends to get more serious in the later series as the characters grow up and the stories deal with more adult themes, although there is still a lot of humour and strange monsters throughout.

The Angel spin-off series is also a bit more 'gritty' than Buffy if that's what you're looking for (although it too does have its silly moments).

AllsortsofAwkward · 26/07/2020 22:46

Buffy is a cult classic a world created about metraphors of young adulthood.nits never meant to be taken completely seriously.

Sickoffamilydrama · 26/07/2020 22:47

I'm re-watching it with my DDs and even though it's cheesy I still love the themes and it lightly touches on a few things.

What is strange is watching it and thinking it was only yesterday I was watching this 20 odd years ago then thinking how young the actors look. I still find it hard to get my head round where those 20 years have gone.

stayathomer · 26/07/2020 22:48

If you start reading descriptions etc you've lost h as of the battle already, just watch on! (And actually I'd assume the very end might possibly bug you but try to watch on anyway) Must rewatch, actually wonder what age I was starting to watch (I have a 12 yo)

Sickoffamilydrama · 26/07/2020 22:50

Just reading the other comments I loved Oz in it I always had a crash on him 🤫

bashcrashfall · 26/07/2020 22:52

I recently rewatched all of Buffy until it got to the weird cross overs with Angel. Buffy doesn't make sense not having watched loads of Angel which isn't on Prime. I don't get this American thing with spin offs and cross overs, very annoying.

Pinkstars2501 · 26/07/2020 22:54

Currently binging it (after watching it first time around when it was current) and still love it!

DH had never seen it 😦. He's glad we're watching.

Plus, spike Grin

Lackadaisically · 26/07/2020 22:54

The tone gets darker but there is always a strong element of silliness about it.

It also has the most moving and powerful episode I have ever seen on TV. It's in a later season and the episode is called 'the body' but DO NOT look it up, the surprise is a major part of the episode.

Lackadaisically · 26/07/2020 22:57

I was watching by 12! I remember being freaked out by part of season 2 whilst on holiday with my grandparents and my Grandad died when I was 13.

getherout34 · 26/07/2020 22:59

From season 4 it's never as good-that was a bad season. The 1st 3 seasons are brilliant. Season 5 is ok at the climax but it and season 4 are generally boring. Season 6 is meh and I gave up for season 7 only watching it sometimes.

The stand alone eps leading to the big bad from seasons 1-3 were the best imho. Seasons 5-7 seemed to take a tome I didn't like.

Sickoffamilydrama · 26/07/2020 22:59

@stayathomer my DD are nearly ( in a month) 11 & 13.
It's actually triggered some good conversations my youngest wants Buffy to date Zander and I've explained that she doesn't have to like him just because he's nice, her friend and wants to date him that's not how it works, also managed to use something I heard on MN that you don't get to have a relationship with someone just because you are nice to them.
I'll have to be careful not to blindly watch later episodes if it gets to dark but I recall Angel was supposed to be more grown up and Buffy less so.

If you liked Buffy try Anne with an E my Dad's loved it.

buzz91 · 26/07/2020 23:00

I love buffy, we’re currently on our second run through of this year, though it has a lot of nostalgia for me! Season 3 has some absolutely amazing episodes, it depends what you think is silly to whether you’ll enjoy it though. Gingerbread is utter rubbish, but unfortunately has some important plot points.

Sickoffamilydrama · 26/07/2020 23:02

*DD's not Dad's I only have one of them 🤦‍♀️

getherout34 · 26/07/2020 23:06

''What is strange is watching it and thinking it was only yesterday I was watching this 20 odd years ago then thinking how young the actors look.''

Eh SMG or David B. have hardly changed a bit-it is scary. They literally look not aged since the show started.

PopcornAndWine · 26/07/2020 23:08

Buffy was my teenage obsession and I just finished a rewatch. Some things I hated the first time around I found I liked more this time (like Riley!). And I really appreciated how what happens at the end of season 5 (no spoilers!) is a pretty good metaphor for transitioning from the teen world to the adult world.

Yes there are plenty of silly things about it too though! It's part of what makes it great imho.

Sickoffamilydrama · 26/07/2020 23:52

@getherout34 SMG looks good for her age but I don't think DB hasn't aged he's got almost white hair in some pictures when I recently Googled although he's still very attractive.

It was weird though to watch it at first because I thought of them as the same age as me because when I watched it I was a teen and to watch it now I get this jolt of they look young and a realisation of how my DD is now closer to 16 than I am.

Does Buffy the Vampire Slayer get a bit silly?
