Coffee alarm clock or a Teasmade

WarriorsComeOutToPlayay · 26/07/2020 18:40

I am terrible at getting up in the morning and cannot function without coffee. A coffee alarm clock is therefore perfect for me but I can't seem to find one.

I remember my Gran had a Teasmade, and think this (using coffee of course) or an equivalent would be perfect. However I worry about the milk being out overnight...

Wise Mumsnetters do you have any recommendations?

Ooooooh I want a Teasmade!

And a 'Toast&ApplePeelandchopforchild-made'

Both of these would transform my mornings!

Alwaysinpain · 26/07/2020 18:45

@WarriorsComeOutToPlayay On a serious note, regarding the milk, you have four options

  1. Powdered Milk (or Coffee Mate if you go for the Coffee one)
  1. Poundland do packs of those little individual cups of milk you get in cafès. Used to use them for a Tassimo in the bedroom as I only drink tea
  1. Get a Tassimo machine and buy milk pods along with coffee and tea pods (Twinings English Breakfast I think the tea ones are)
  1. Buy a mini fridge and remember to bring up fresh milk every few days.

☕️

Thanks Always, really helpful. Do Tassimo machines have a timer?

We've just bought a filter coffee maker. I cannot believe we didn't get one years ago it's amazing. You set the timer and it's ready when you want it in the morning. Not sure if it's practical for the bedroom if that's what you're after though?

missnevermind · 26/07/2020 18:58

My friend just has a tassimo in the bedroom. You don't need an alarm as it only takes a few seconds to make the drink.

missnevermind · 26/07/2020 19:00

Butterer I have the non digital version of that. It fantastic for the travel cups.

ProperVexed · 26/07/2020 19:14

We were given a modern teasmade after DH waxed lyrical about the one his parents had in his youth. It was bloody awful. For starters it had an illuminated clock dial that was so bright that airplanes from the local airport were diverting over our garden. Then it took an age, an absolute age, to boil the water. It was soooo noisy! Then, if the light and noisy boil wasn't enough, once it had boiled it poured the water into the waiting teapot at maximum volume. Then, and this was the final nail in its coffin, it had the audacity to beep loudly three times to tell you it had finished.
By this time I was a screaming banshee. I needed gin not tea.
It is banished to the attic. I now have a kettle next to the bed that I flick on as I turn over. I then make camomile tea...no need for milk!

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/07/2020 19:30

My grandparents had one but they used sterilised milk.

Alwaysinpain · 26/07/2020 19:41

@WarriorsComeOutToPlayay No timer I do t think. Unless the newer ones do?

Make yourself a thermos for your bedside table before bed? Or one of those nespresso machines for the bedroom?

WarriorsComeOutToPlayay · 26/07/2020 22:23

Thanks for everyones suggestions. A thermos of milk or coffee the night before isn't right for me (but might be for people who are better organised than I am). I want something convenient that I don't even have to pour anything myself or even push a button in my sleepy state because I just won't do it (I know how zombie like I am in the morning)! I am hoping that the smell of freshly made coffee will wake me up. I think it is either a Teasmade or the one Butterer suggested with a normal mug so it is the right drinking temperature.

Freeze milk in an ice cube tray. Each night when you bring up a fresh mug and teabag/coffee just pop a frozen milk cube in the bottom of the cup.

I’m going to sort myself one I think. We have a spare filter coffee machine, I reckon I could just use it empty with a cup and teabag. Safer than pouring a kettle from bed.

Ernieshere · 26/07/2020 22:38

What next OP, Poptarts? Shock

Only joking, I really want one, I dont care if its tea or coffee, I just want it made by something.

IloveJudgeJudy · 27/07/2020 07:01

Since lockdown our staff fridge has been off limits. I bought myself a 250/260 ml Chilly bottle as I’m having to take my own milk to work (it’s either that or have tea from a Klix machine 🤮). It keeps the milk very cold.

StonersPotPalace · 27/07/2020 07:05

I can't believe I've never thought to put a tassimo in the bedroom!

daisypond · 27/07/2020 07:13

I’ve got a Teasmade. We do the frozen milk in an ice cube in summer. In winter we tend to just leave normal milk in the cup. It’s fine. The only thing I’d say is that it doesn’t get as hot as tea from a kettle. Also, because DH and I now work shifts, we can’t actually use it much because it’ll wake the other up.

newphoneswhodis · 27/07/2020 07:14

I got a teasmade for Christmas. So excited. But the amount of times my kids knocked my lamp off my bedside table makes me too scared to set it up for fear of it breaking. 😩

Which model did you get please?
ScrapThatThen · 27/07/2020 07:29

OP, have you considered a sunrise alarm clock?

sashh · 27/07/2020 08:01

Addiing to @Alwaysinpain get a flask to keep the milk in over night.

You can set up any filter coffee machine to a timer, just get a timer plug.

Set everything up the night before and set the timer.

If you have alexa or similar you can control the timer via that. YTou can have a 'monring routine' set up that plays you some music, makes your coffee and gives you the news headlines.

I don't drink milk and I don't have a problem getting up but I use my spare bedroom as an office and I have a tassimo in there.

vanillandhoney · 27/07/2020 08:07

We have a cheap filter coffee machine from Amazon that you can set a timer on. It's an absolute game-changer!

Fruitbowlflowers · 27/07/2020 08:23

I’d go with a filter with timer. We had a filter coffee machine and the joy of waking up and going downstairs to fresh coffee was amazing. However it does require you to remember to set it all up the night before.
I second the style linked to above with the coffee bags - they’re all over in American hotels and if they don’t have a timer switch then it’s easy to put a timer plug on.
One thing op, if you need coffee to wake up it’s a massive sign you’re not getting enough sleep. It maybe worth looking at your sleep hygiene and seeing if making a few small changes could help. Matthew walkers book why we sleep is really helpful, or if you prefer podcasts he’s been on ‘live more feel better’ dr Chatterjee podcast talking about it.
