Family event in Spain next Sunday... can I still go?

TR888 · 25/07/2020 20:38

I'm due to fly out to northern Spain for a family event this Thursday. The area is one of the least affected by Covid cases in the country. However, FCO's recommending no travel to Spain except for essential reasons, which obviously this isn't.

I so want to go. This is a really important event... what happens if I still go? Its not a problem to go on quarantine on my return.

Shouldn’t be a problem. However If something happens your insurance might not cover you.

I’m meant to go to the Basque Country at the end of the month (August) and I’m in between two minds.

Splitsunrise · 25/07/2020 20:41

Going away without insurance that would cover you is a very risky thing to do...

MotheringShites · 25/07/2020 20:45

It’s a fucking farce. People have booked holidays to Spain because government advice said it was okay. Now they need to magic an extra two week leave. Nonsense. I am starting to think there will be mass revolt to the “rules” after this.

MotheringShites · 25/07/2020 20:46

Oh, and in your situation I would 100% go.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 25/07/2020 21:02

I booked a holiday to Malaga after they said it was ok. Meant to go 12 August. Now we can't as DH can't have another 2 weeks off work. Tempted to go on my own 😂

Frazzled2207 · 25/07/2020 21:04

In your situation I would probably go (but not with children). However more (not all) flights to Spain will probably be cancelled now. If it is cancelled then at least you will get money back.

Yetiyoga · 25/07/2020 21:05

I wouldn't be going personally. I feel sorry for the Spanish too who are having Korean spikes and now also have all these tourists coming in. Your insurance might not cover you and it isn't essential..get your money back.

whenwillthemadnessend · 25/07/2020 21:08

Obviously this was going to happen. Anyone that booked abroad this year are gambling on getting back or quarantine rules. Up to them but I have no sympathy in all honesty. It's common sense.

People were stupid then.

Everyone’s aware this is an ongoing, developing situation where nobody knows what is happening. Lockdown has been eased but the pandemic isn’t over; anyone who thought they would be able to just get on a plane and jet off like normal was foolish and naive.

(I should make it clear I am talking about people who booked holidays after Corona, not those with prebooked holidays.)

whenwillthemadnessend · 25/07/2020 21:09

When I say booked abroad I mean post covid not those who booked last year and have not got refunds.

It’s not a farce. There has been a resurgence in cases and that means it’s no longer safe to travel there. Quite frankly booking a foreign holiday during a pandemic is stupid and selfish.

Why do so many people feel entitled to a foreign holiday? There will be plenty of time for travel when it’s over.

GirlCalledJames · 25/07/2020 21:28

Latest daily figures are 61 deaths in the UK and 3 in Spain. I check most days and the UK seems to have at least 10 times more.
Levels in Spain are comparable with December 2019.
I can’t understand why the newly imposed quarantine isn’t the other way around.

TR888 · 25/07/2020 21:28

Thanks. This is no regular holiday, but a trip to this family event. My only motivation for the trip is to be with my family at this time - I bought the flights in February pre-Covid.

Thank you.

I'm super cautious, but in your situation I would go.
Only issue is- if flights start to be cancelled, do you have a way to get back?

heartsonacake · 25/07/2020 21:31

February was not pre-Covid. It was starting to become obvious there was a significant issue that was rapidly turning into a worldwide pandemic.

TR888 · 25/07/2020 21:36

In early February, only a minuscule minority would imagine Covid would become a pandemic. Thanks.

I would go if you have a way of ensuring you aren’t a danger to your family in Spain. That seems the bigger risk.

Surely you can't expect the Govt to have a crystal ball and be able to predict the future situation of every country a British person might go to?

It's pretty clear to anyone with half a brain that if you book international travel this year there's a risk that the pandemic situation has changed and could result in lockdowns or quarantines...

GirlCalledJames · 25/07/2020 21:38

I love how individual posters are expected to have had so much more foresight than the government. Of course most people were still buying European flights in February.

I haven't fact checked this myself but a poster on another thread said that Spain's reported numbers in terms of deaths have some odd rules.

I believe they suggested that they only report deaths in the last 36 hours so if any deaths are reported from before that period they are not counted in the numbers.

Rubbish. First death in Italy was 22nd Feb. Nobody in Europe took much notice until Italy went into quarantine in early March (and most people not even then). UK in general for sure didn't take it seriously until forced into lockdown.
MarshaBradyo · 25/07/2020 21:42

Check your insurance

peajotter · 25/07/2020 21:42

@GirlCalledJames the death rate lags weeks behind the infection rate (as it takes a long time from infection to death). It doesn’t tell you much about the current situation.

Yesterday Spain had 2255 cases for 46 million people, and it’s rising.

The U.K. had 768 cases for 67 million people and it’s stable.

pasturesgreen · 25/07/2020 21:43

It depends really. You said quarantine wouldn't be a problem, so as an adult going on my own I'd probably risk it for a milestone family occasion (i.e. patents' golden wedding anniversary, probably; second cousin's confirmation, not so much). If travelling with children, no way.

Ofitck · 25/07/2020 21:48

I'd go for a family event. I'm from the Basque Country my family live in a England and in Spain we are just starting the second wave, the uk will be a few weeks behind. In any case in Spain it feels safer due to everyone wearing masks at all times as well as the 1.5m distance, here in the uk people are only just wearing shops from today. Also, in Spain the rules are enforceable, since I've been in the uk not one phone call to check I was quarantining (I was!). My Spanish town has fewer cases than where my parents live in the uk.
