I have twins who are almost 4, both are autistic and non verbal at the moment. Another parent mentioned this programme to me and despite it being expensive I decided to try it for a couple of months and see how it goes. Essentially it’s a video modelling system for speech and language development (with some additional tools for other things).
We’ve just started today and we are starting on level 1. I was massively sceptical and figured the boys would not watch it at all as the videos to me seem quite dull, usually they want things to be very visually engaging or fast moving. I’ve been shocked to see how engaged they are with it. The one who is slightly ahead with sounds and very occasionally copying movements copied some actions independently on the second viewing and the other was absolutely engrossed in it.
I actually feel really hopeful about it and it seems there’s some good evidence backing up the efficacy. I can see a lot of things I’ve read in the way they are doing things so it makes sense to me, but I guess so much depends on the child and how they learn best. They aren’t too interested in people so don’t really watch your mouth move etc when you’re talking but they’re watching these videos quite intently so maybe they’ll pick up more from it.
I hadn’t actually heard of it until this week - I was just wondering if anyone has used it longer term and whether it has had any effect? In a week’s time we will be trying to test their understanding from the first video - already intrigued as it’s very hard for us to assess how much they can understand. Happy to update then if anyone is interested :)
They’ve had such little input from SALT and we’ve just been reading books and trying to help them as much as we can but I know we could be doing better.
Would love to talk to anyone else that’s doing it or has done it in the past, whether good or bad.
(I realise this may sound like promotion but it definitely isn’t - if you search my username you’ll see I’m a long-standing regular user, just thought others may have experience with it or might want to look into it themselves)
