Barometric pressure headaches, anyone else suffer?

I didn't even know this was a thing until a few weeks ago but since I've started tracking my headaches and the weather, there does seem to be a link.

Does anyone else suffer? Do you find they seem to affect your eyes too? I can't really explain it well but when I have the headache it feels like I have to concentrate on focusing my vision, if that makes sense. How do you best manage them? Paracetamol or ibuprofen don't really seem to touch them for me.

Yes, worse headache if it is very overcast and doesn't rain.

I tend to weather watch and take meds the second I suspect this will turn into a headache. Plus I take migraleve as it has an anti nausea which helps.

Hi OP,
Yes, I am suffering with one now, I just checked the weather forecast & lo and behold, thunderstorms on the way.
Paracetamol generally does the trick for me.

hippohector · 25/07/2020 11:26

I get these op, particularly if it is very humid or there is a storm brewing. I also get the pain behind my right eye and everything feels a bit blurry.

I take soluable Solpadeine which contains Paracetamol and Codeine. The soluable ones are much more effective than the tablets you swallow whole, although it tastes vile (good excuse for a biscuit afterwards to take the taste away) Smile

I also take Nurofen Plus, which is Ibuprofen and Codeine. These are much stronger and more effective than just ibuprofen on its own.

I usually alternate the Solpadeine and Nurofen Plus every 4-6 hours - they both contain codeine so just be careful you space the doses out properly and only take for a maximum of three days as codeine can apparently be addictive.

Yep. I find they're worse if I'm not drinking enough too. Try a glass of squash or water. A shower can also help, or an ice pack on my neck/forehead.

I have to catch them early or they turn into migraines which is super fun.

MoMandaS · 25/07/2020 11:29

DH gets these. Ibuprofen with Lysine (e.g. Feminax) takes the edge off.

PerfidiousAlbion · 25/07/2020 12:28

Yes, same here. I just keep an eye on the pressure on my weather app and plan accordingly.

Pertella · 25/07/2020 12:32

Me too. Dull ache between the eyes, just enough to be annoying and distracting but not painful IYSWIM. I get visual problems too, not quite blurred vision but a kind of fuzziness in my peripheral vision?

menofharlech · 25/07/2020 12:37

Another bad sufferer here. I can tell the weather before I get up in the morning as I get throbbing pain over my eye..

Got a cracker today. I also get fuzzy vision, get very tired and either crave carbs or feel sick (or sometimes both).

If I can (like today) I write the day off. Otherwise I try and keep fluids up and nurofen although that only eases them.

FinallyHere · 25/07/2020 12:38

Oh yes.

And the relief when the weather breaks and the things set and lightening arrive is almost worth it.

BearSoFair · 25/07/2020 12:58

Not drinking enough is most likely playing a part for me too, it's something I have to think about every day! Will look at picking up some solpadeine/nurofen plus when I do the shopping as well. You describe it perfectly Pertella, fuzziness is exactly the word I was looking for!

I do OP.
If it's windy or a thunderstorm is coming my head starts hurting.
I normally take 2 extra strength paracetamol at the start to ward it off.

Lisette1940 · 25/07/2020 13:05

I get them too OP

IndieTara · 25/07/2020 13:23

Yes had these for years and if not careful they turn into migraines with Vomiting for a day.
Lack of sleep and fluids makes it worse for me.
I also take soluble Solpadeine Max as well as ibuprofen and Sumatriptan

Myothercarisalsoshit · 25/07/2020 13:33

Yes and I'm a cluster headache sufferer too. July has been awful for me so far. I take sumatriptan as I have a diagnosis of cluster. I also suffer badly on planes, the pressure just builds and builds. Not fun.

Wolfgirrl · 25/07/2020 13:47

Yes yes yes! Feels like my head is in a vice. It's the only time I ever get headaches. It's a horrible pressurey feeling that only goes away when it rains and the pressure drops.

Shinygoldbauble · 25/07/2020 13:49

Yes. It's horrible, isn't it. One of my dc suffers too.

Ilikewinter · 25/07/2020 13:53

Yep another sufferer here!!

Just to save you some money dont buy Solpadine and Nurofen plus, always buy the generic versions....Boots do their own versions of both drugs. (Im sure other chemists will do to!).

Grumblyberries · 25/07/2020 13:55

yes me too, and the relief when the storm hits is huge. Can turn into migraines with dizziness and sickness too.

spiderlight · 25/07/2020 14:55

Yes, very much so, including the eye thing - there's a weird sort of empty feeling between my eyes and it quite often turns into a migraine.

FlugelHugel · 25/07/2020 14:59

How strange! I've been wondering about this myself for the past few weeks - these close, muggy, overcast days we've been having have been causing me headaches (usually over one of my eyes). The very thundery weather we had a few weeks ago almost affected my vision, made it feel "buzzy" if that makes sense. Sat here now with a headache over my left eye...

Flamingolingo · 25/07/2020 15:02

Yes! Me too! Weather is one of my triggers for migraine with aura. Others are hormones, not drinking enough, not enough sleep...

newtb · 25/07/2020 15:15

Yes, and affects my sinuses, too. Unfortunately, I live on the n/s and e/w border between Continental and Atlantic weather systems. Each time there's a change - sinusitis and splitting headache

CourtneyLurve · 25/07/2020 15:22

Another sufferer here. This morning was brutal, was almost in tears. It's dissipated a bit this afternoon. Praying for a hard rain.

HopefulFor2020 · 25/07/2020 15:48

Yes! The entire left side of my head hurts, I can hardly open my left eye and I get toothache (I'm guessing that's more the jaw but it feels like it's in the tooth). Really feels like my skull is being crushed from one side by the pressure. Unfortunately they seem to be getting worse as I get older

BearSoFair · 25/07/2020 16:05

FlugelHugel I've found I've had a lot more over the last few weeks as well, it does seem to have been particularly close and muggy lately.

Sorry to see so many of us suffer with them, I can't believe I never knew it was a recognised thing until recently!
