Sugarlamb?

Arthurcroughton · 24/07/2020 17:55

I made my 9month old some muffins the other day and honey was one of the ingredients in it. My DS ate one and my hard sank babies can’t have honey. Took it away as soon as it come to mind. I’m so worried and full of guilt. Should I be concerned 🙁

Is that you pumpkin?

FlibbertyGiblets · 24/07/2020 17:57

It is fine, try to not worry.

zigaziga · 24/07/2020 18:01

Well if it was the other day, surely you’re in the clear by now?

zigaziga · 24/07/2020 18:02

Btw my toddler’s main source of food for a long time is soil ... so ... that’s probably worse?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/07/2020 18:11

It will be fine, honestly.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 24/07/2020 18:12

Raw honey is a botulism risk. I’m pretty sure that cooking it will have rendered it safe. Don’t worry.

ThreeLeggedCat · 24/07/2020 18:12

Keep an eye on him for a few days. Risk is botulism. Any vomiting, diahorrea etc, take him straight to doctor.

sirfredfredgeorge · 24/07/2020 18:15

Infant botulism is very rare.
98% of all infant botulism is under 6 months old.

The chances of a problem are very, very slim of there being a problem, the other day is not necessarily soon enough to know, it takes time for the bacteria to reproduce and colonise.

Just watch for any sign of illness, I believe constipation is a common first symptom.

ThreeLeggedCat · 24/07/2020 18:15

MarkRuffaloCrumble it’s a spore former, so cooking won’t destroy it.

sirfredfredgeorge · 24/07/2020 18:16

I’m pretty sure that cooking it will have rendered it safe

The spores need considerable time over 100 degrees to be killed (depends just how hot) I doubt a muffin would actually have achieved that.

Arthurcc · 24/07/2020 18:34

Would you know how many days? I can’t find much info on the timescale?

sirfredfredgeorge · 24/07/2020 20:43

I believe most will start showing symptoms within 2 days, obviously one of the problems is the few cases that there are don't always have a known time when they ingested the spores.

As I say though, it really is very, very rare in 9 month olds, the likelihood is they already have the stomach to deal with it like any toddler and older.

Arthurcc · 24/07/2020 21:13

Thank you. It was Monday he ate it so fingers crossed he’s going to be okay
