9 week old baby ill - Doctor not concerned but it doesn’t seem right

My baby started getting green mucusy poos just over a week ago.

I have it over the weekend to see if it would improve but it’s still there.
Very green, very mucusy.

I spoke to the GP on Monday and They didn’t want to see baby in the clinic and just said that as long as she’s still feeding and not dehydrated not to worry yet and it will take around 2 weeks to go from her system

Is that right because NHS says to take a baby to hospital if their poos have mucus in them.

She’s been otherwise fine but is throwing up some feeds which she wasn’t doing before and sometimes coughs which I guess is due to some milk coming back up as I can hear her swallowing maybe an hour after she’s fed

She’s breastfed.

It was a sign of cmpa here too. Though we did have a rash and reflux and she was very unsettled most of the time. Started becoming really obvious from around 6 weeks. But there can be a wide range of symptoms. If you're on Facebook there's a group called breastfeeding with cmpa and other allergies that I found really helpful. My youngest is now two and can tolerate most things but still can't have milk to drink without getting a rash.

Ps just seen your last post - vegan magnums, Oatly ice cream, loads of good stuff! I started off losing a fair bit of weight, but not for long Blush

Delay the vaccinations until you have this sorted out, OP.

It does sound like CMPA but I would wait to be sure it isn't a virus.

Coming at this from the perspective of having 2 allergy children - 1 dairy soya & avocado, 1 dairy, wheat, soya, some fruits and egg.

Don't cut dairy and soya at the same time, as you won't know if both are a problem or just one.

I'd cut dairy first, but try not to replace it with soya alternatives in case soya turns out to be a problem. You'll need to check ingredients of everything as things like casein and whey hide in lots of food that you wouldn't expect e.g ham, wine, cucumber skin, sausages.

If after 3-6 weeks there's no difference or some easing but not totally resolved then cut soya - that hides in way more stuff though.

Also have you had your latch checked? And has baby been checked for tongue tie by someone specially trained (my eldest was checked by multiple hcps who all said no TT, then a specialist checked and she had a significant posterior TT)

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 24/07/2020 21:21

Speaking as someone who had to give up dairy for this reason And slightly oanicked about treats:

Galaxy vegan salted caramel choc.
Ben & Jerrys dairy free ice cream (esp coconut caramel)
Oatly ice cream
Bourbon creams
Lotus Biscoff biscuits
Chicago Town vegan pizza

All totally fab.

If you do need to give up soya, be aware it is most sliced bread. Good luck.

Rebelwithallthecause · 24/07/2020 21:31

@PurpleGoose I saw a lactation consultant to check for latch and tongue tie early on so all good there

@RubaiyatOfAnyone thank you! That’s a good list of treats

I’m going through my food shop coming this weekend swapping out things and just saw how it’s hard to find bread without soy! Why do they need soy in bread?!

Also realised that it’s a little tricky with some things as I’m allergic to nuts and so many things without dairy have almonds in for some reason

This link suggests mucousy green poo is from undigested saliva

Rebelwithallthecause · 24/07/2020 21:44

@Delbelleber she’s been more drooly lately with the hand chomping , maybe that’s to do with it too

Most of Aldi's bread is soya free.

My dd has a milk and soya allergy.

youmakemewannashoutloud · 24/07/2020 22:24

I think it's developmental around that age green poo's. Maybe a change of milk content? I'm guessing here, as breastfeeding is a bit of an unknown. Both mine had it, first baby I tried block feeding, did nothing. Second I just breast fed as normal. Lasted on and off 2 weeks. Lots of dribbling signs of teething, first baby teeth appeared at 16 weeks, second baby still didn't have teeth at 7 months. Did get slightly sore bums. So makes me think it's not teeth.

Personally feed through it as normal. Don't limit feeds, offer both sides and keep hydrated. I bet you're not drinking enough, always an issue for me bf.

youmakemewannashoutloud · 24/07/2020 22:28

If baby still awake and hungry after both sides or you think it might be a hunger cue other first side again. And sorry if I sounded bossy .. trying to help. You're doing a great job !

Jackson's bread is soya free

Missmonkeypenny · 24/07/2020 22:37

Sounds lile CMPA. My son has it along with a soya allergy and our biggest symptoms were green mucus poos wind, congestion, coughing. Never had any rashes.

cosycatsocks · 24/07/2020 22:45

We had green poo with teething and viruses, was not cmpa. Most of the time it is not cmpa. Listen to your dr. If you are not happy with their advice get a second opinion or insist on a peads referral.

Does this help at all? I would of been lost without this in the early days x

I know it’s a pain but I think it’s worth trying to cut out dairy and soya for 2 weeks, then you’ll know for definite. If things improve you can add soya back in and see where you are after 2 weeks of that. I would second the suggestion of oatly ice cream, all their products are great. I carried on having their “milk” in coffee after I’d stopped breastfeeding. There are some garlic breads that use olive oil instead of butter, that’s something else I missed initially. It might be worth getting a second opinion on the TT too, just in case.
