My gran (75), the woman who raised me, the person I am closest to in the world, fell and broke her hip today.

They will be operating tomorrow, full replacement. She has lung cancer, they are doing a chest x ray due to concern of anaesthetic.

Does anyone have any experience of this? I am distraught. I can’t visit her until she’s on a ward, and only by appointment so might not be allowed pre op.

My great aunt had two successful ones in her nineties!

Elieza · 23/07/2020 17:34

Hope all goes well today.

PS make sure she does the exercises as my pal knows someone who didn’t and they became stiff and never regained full mobility. The exercises are given for a reason, even if they seem sore or hard make sure she does them.

Thanks everyone.

She’s in surgery now, should be back on the ward between 7 and 8.

I had this exact scenario, gran also brought me up. I was distraught (do NOT google). She came though it fine and recovered really well. She then did the other hip 18 months ago and has had another fall during lockdown and fractured her pelvis. Every time I go into panic mode and this time, because I couldn't even visit, I kept having the awful thought that I may never see her again. She's home again and walking around. You wouldn't even know she had done it!

Teaandbiscuits88 · 23/07/2020 20:13

Thank you @OhYeahYouSuck that’s really reassuring to hear. On tenterhooks now, she should be out of surgery but can’t get hold of the hospital

Rooting for your DGM and you OP. 3 of my friends have had hip replacements in their 60s and my DM had one In her 70s. An 85 year old neighbour fell and needed one. They all made excellent recoveries. The 60 year olds are yomping about and playing tennis and my DM and neighbour are walking minus any limp or pain.

I really hope all goes well for your DGM. It’s an OP with a very high success rate even in those who elderly and not in particularly great health.

She’s out of surgery and in recovery!! Thank you everyone for the handhold xx

My gran had 2 hips done in her 90s - both emergencies after falls. Both under sedation/spinal rather than generals.

Both were good recoveries and she was on her feet the next day - really amazing how straightforward an op it is these days.

Wishing your nan all the best x

DobbyTheHouseElk · 23/07/2020 21:22

Good to hear.

FelicityBeedle · 24/07/2020 01:16

I’d love to hear updateS if you’re up to it! I hope she recovers well

Ilovesausages · 24/07/2020 02:43

Such good news - hope she recovers quickly xxx

Pacamacka · 24/07/2020 06:28

Sending healing vibes for a good recovery. It’s such a horrible feeling waiting for someone to come out of theatre. Glad the op is done. Love to you both.

Teaandbiscuits88 · 24/07/2020 13:36

Thank you everyone for your kindness.

She was kept awake for the surgery and said it was fine - she doesn’t know exactly what she had done though. She was very scared beforehand but said it was all ok.

She was moved to a main ward this morning after her covid test came back negative (hooray!). I was able to FaceTime with her and was surprised at how normal she seemed. She was chatting away and fussing about the state of her hair in the screen 😂. Back to her normal self. Physio were about to see her when we hung up.

No slots available for visiting today and she’s only allowed 1 visitor per day. My mum is going tomorrow and I’m going Sunday.

Will post more updates for anyone interested ☺️

So glad for you that DGM seemed her usual self when you face timed and her COVID test was negative. I hope you find her comfortable on Sunday when you visit. It’s an operation with a very good success rate so hopefully physio will help her to get back on her feet and home ASAP. Look after yourself too. It’s emotionally draining having someone so close in hospital especially at the moment.

FelicityBeedle · 24/07/2020 22:48

I’m glad she’s doing well! Always a good sign when people seem their self. Have they given you any estimation for discharge date?

Teaandbiscuits88 · 25/07/2020 14:21

They’ve said she will likely be in for at least 2 weeks. She’s having issues with her breathing/coughing lots today which happens a lot with her lungs. At least she’s in the right place to receive help.

Pacamacka · 25/07/2020 18:57

She is in the right place OP. Physio will help clear her chest. Seeing you tomorrow will be a tonic for her too. How did she seem today when your mum visited.

Teaandbiscuits88 · 25/07/2020 19:10

Mum said she seemed much better this afternoon. They’ve got her on an IV and are giving her oxygen and it’s really helped.

You’re right @Pacamacka, seeing her tomorrow is going to help tonnes.

OP posts:
Pacamacka · 25/07/2020 21:07

That’s good to hear. They sound like they know exactly what needs doing to help which must be reassuring for you. Hope your visit does you both good tomorrow

FelicityBeedle · 28/07/2020 13:44

Hope your gran seemed ok on Sunday

Teaandbiscuits88 · 28/07/2020 18:48

It was so lovely to see her on Sunday. Felt so much better for it.

She’s on and off an iv as her blood pressure is all over the shop. She’s had it confirmed by the surgeon this morning that she will def be in for at least a fortnight and then will be ‘non weight bearing’ for around 6 weeks. We will be able to stay with her until September but will need a plan B if she still needs care past that as my kids will be back in school.

@IndieTara

I'm younger than your gran but had a hip replacement 2 years ago. Best thing I ever did. It's very painful and stiff for a few weeks afterwards but within 6 weeks I didn't need crutches. I now need the other one done and can't wait .
Sorry to derail, but would you mind telling me how your hip problem started?

I'm not sure if the pain I'm suddenly having is 'hip replacement' type hip issue or something else and I'm avoiding going to my GP for now (covid worries due to underlying issues)

@Teaandbiscuits88. Get her home as soon as you can & try to get them
To keep the sides of her bed up. Best wishes for you both 🌷🌷

IndieTara · 02/09/2020 14:45

@IncrediblySadToo hi and apologies I've only just seen that you tagged me!
My hip replacement started with a diagnosis of OA 10 yrs previous. The pain when walking got steadily worse til I limped everywhere. The GP didn't do anything as Ibwas 'much too young for a hip replacement ' in my 40's.
I finally saw a consultant after being admitted to hospital after my hip Ickes at work and he said I should have been sent to see him 10!yrs earlier
