Saying "thank you" to your boss too much?

I say "thank you" to my bosses a lot. Mainly because I am actually genuinely thankful. Partly because that who I am (I say it to everyone). I often think they must find it a bit cringe though. But what else to do? Not much can replace a thank you.

Would appreciate your thoughts, particularly if you are a boss.

What sort of thing are you thanking them for?

FUBARFlossie · 22/07/2020 11:04

Any time they help me etc.

Has somebody told you you’re saying it too much?

edwinbear · 22/07/2020 11:23

I say thank you to anyone who helps me - it's manners. Depends a bit how you do it though, if my boss helps me, by giving me some advice on how to manage or situation, or for example, he did some numerical analysis for me this week because he is much faster and better at it than me, then I will say 'thanks very much for doing that, appreciate your time'. If your sending long e mails thanking them, for example, then that would look a bit weird.

FUBARFlossie · 22/07/2020 11:28

No, not long emails, but I would send a very short thank you message if they fixed something for me, eg: a problem with holidays.

Nobody has said that I do it too much. I just worry about it. But I would do it for anyone.

I think it is normal to thank people for doing things for you. I don’t see why it would be a problem.

BridgeFarmKefir · 22/07/2020 11:38

You're overthinking 😊 it's nice to say thanks. My boss sent the company an email the other day thanking us all for our hard work during lockdown etc, and I replied thanking her for her leadership. It felt light the right thing to do!

FUBARFlossie · 22/07/2020 11:38

I suppose that I worry that it would not be taken as genuine, when I do mean it genuinely.

Yes, probably over thinking.

Bump

So boss emails and says “your holiday issue is now all fixed”
You reply “That's great, thanks”

That’s perfectly normal.

On the other hand, if they told you, verbally, that it was fixed, then just say thanks there and then. Don’t do a separate email.

FUBARFlossie · 22/07/2020 12:32

I would do both. I guess that is a problem.

Honestly you're overthinking this. No need to keep 'bumping' as it's a bit of a non issue

SomeFolksA · 22/07/2020 12:49

Totally overthinking. If someone does something and emails you to let you know a reply of thanks is normal. If they tell you verbally a there and then verbal “thanks” is normal. I suppose a follow up email would be unusual if you’ve already verbally thanked them unless it was a particular big issue.

FUBARFlossie · 22/07/2020 13:04

OK, point taken. Non ironic thank you Grin
