Will my GP give me a note for this?

Just returned to work. Before furlough, it was agreed by my boss and HR that I could wear my own trousers as the uniform ones contain wool and polyester which I'm allergic to. Went in today in the trousers I'd been wearing before furlough and was sent home as they're not uniform.

I either have to wear the wool/poly trousers that aggravate my eczema or get a note from the GP saying I have a medical need to wear other trousers. Is it likely that my GP will do this kind of note?

Business manager today was really awful about it - he had a right go at me in front of both a customer and pretty much the entire staff working. Honestly not sure what to do otherwise - I've tried leggings under them and ended up so hot I threw up.

Thank you

Speak to your manager. If that person is not available then speak to HR. If there's been an agreement because of your health then that agreement stands. If I'd have been you I'd have quietly spoken to the business manager and explained.

Yes . My husband had to go through a similar rigmarole due to an allergy, called GP they left a letter at reception for him and all was sorted

It was the business manager who sent me home today. I don't have anyone higher to go to and HR weren't much help last time.

He literally said that I have to get a note from my GP or wear the uniform trousers. If I don't do one of those things, I won't be allowed to work.

Does the company you work for have an occupational health service?

QuestionableMouse · 22/07/2020 10:48

I don't believe so. I do have private health care through work though so I can try them too?

I imagine you’ll be able to get a letter, although whether it’s actually useful will probably depend on whether your eczema is recorded as being triggered by wool. Otherwise you’ll probably get a “Questionable has advised that she’s unable to wear the uniform trousers due to them aggravating her excema” type thing.

You might have to pay for the letter, I think they’re about £40 here.

Nix2020 · 22/07/2020 10:52

Was this agreed in writing? If it were they should never have sent you home? Tbh it wasn't nessary to send you home. However I'd go to them and ask them to supply you with trousers that will not impact your health. You obviously will advise what will suit you best.

I'd also take advice from your union, or acas to find out how to move forward protecting your health. However there is no harm in contacting your Dr for a letter.

QuestionableMouse · 22/07/2020 10:57

I'm honestly at the point where I don't have it in me to fight with them. I made a complaint about this manager in March and I have a feeling this is his way of punishing me for it (as I've not been at work since then).

Not agreed in writing as he wasn't willing to do that. It was discussed in front of a HR staff member but she has since left the company so it comes down to my word against his and he has a lot more power iyswim?

Is it lanolin in wool that causes your eczema?

Ask your GP or Dermatologist for a letter. I've see a letter for a patient to get different working boots because of a foot problem. You'd probably have to pay for the letter though.

QuestionableMouse · 22/07/2020 11:12

Happy to pay for a letter if needed. I just want to be comfortable at work.

Is your company large enough to have an occupational health dept? If so, this would be a case for them. This is a totally useless post if you don't have occ health Wink

Thislittlelady · 22/07/2020 11:44

They are being discriminatory. And yes your gp will write a note/letter for you

QuestionableMouse · 22/07/2020 11:51

Thank you. I've just finished the online consultation form so I'm just waiting to hear back.
