Prawn roulette

Does anyone ever feel like they're taking their life in their own hands when they eat prawns?

I love them, and (touch wood) have never had a bad experience, but every time I eat them, I cant help but think that just one bad prawn could turn my insides out! It sort of puts me off a bit, although not enough to stop eating them.

Is it just me? Am I a weirdo, or is prawn roulette a mental struggle I share with anyone else?!

I love prawns but the roulettes now just taste like water. If it wasnt for the sauce theyd taste of nothing. So, dont worry missing them out.

Real prawns are lovely but getting more and more expensive.

Frownette · 21/07/2020 19:47

Are you both talking at cross purposes?

Just eating normal prawns? I don't get that feeling but do with mussels.

ScottyDottyDooDah · 21/07/2020 19:54

Kez200 - I was saying that the act.of eating prawns feels a bit roulette-y. I'm not sure what eating actual roulettes entails?! Grin

The prawns I had tonight were thawed from frozen and smelt ever so slightly fishy, although definitely not off. They're still playing on my mind though!

Prawns thawed from frozen always smell fishy. It never crosses my mind, sorry OP!

LunaNorth · 21/07/2020 20:05

@Kez200 do you mean an Iceland prawn ring? 😂

Looking at your user name I’m now wondering if you’re Kerry Katona...

topcat2014 · 21/07/2020 20:06

Of course prawns smell a bit fishy? Why wouldn't they..

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 21/07/2020 20:07

Nope. I'm more concerned about eating chicken.

Elouera · 21/07/2020 20:09

Never had an issue with prawns, but obviously wouldn't eat them if they smelt off or were undercooked.

I've always eaten seafood and usually get it from fresh from the seafood market. NEVER had an issue till last year when we got mussles. Apparently there had been an outbreak of norovirus and my goodness, DH and I were sick. Its put me off them TBH, even though its the 1st time in 40yrs I've had an issue.

Kez200 · 21/07/2020 20:11

Yeah! Thought you meant the prawn rings. We call them roulettes!

I feel like that with mussels too (so dont eat them) and I also wont eat "random fish pie" I need the fish described properly!

So I know what you mean just with different seafoods.

AWhistlingWoman · 21/07/2020 20:11

I agree with frownette, I get the roulette feeling far more with mussels. Prawns, I scoff quite happily!

ScottyDottyDooDah · 21/07/2020 20:11

I've always read that fresh prawns should smell of the sea as opposed to smelling particularly fishy! So surely freshly unfrozen prawns also shouldn't smell fishy?! Grin

"The tide is high".....lalalalalala

Titsywoo · 21/07/2020 20:23

As long as you devein the prawns and they have been stored properly there isn't much risk surely? Mussels always seem a bit more dodgy to me.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 21/07/2020 20:26

I had prawns from a market once. Worst food poisoning ever which I didn't recover from and then diagnosed with Crohn's disease. Am now incredibly careful with dates and where I buy them from!

purplecorkheart · 21/07/2020 20:37

I am not really. Only buy my prawns from trusted two fishmongers. They are a treat so happy to pay the extra cost. They also shell them, devine them for me and give me the shells so I can make bisque.

I am quite wary of mussels after reading Anthony Bourdin's book and also my mother many years ago eating mussels that had cracked shells. I was ten, she tried to put on a brave face but still remember how terrified I was for her.
