God pls help me write work “development” goals

If it weren’t for Covid and the current job climate, I would’ve left my job yesterday.

I’ve been asked to come up with a development goal for the year and seriously struggling with wtf I should write.

Anyone good at helping me come up with some short waffle about improving my time management skills or something?

I’ve been googling development goal examples but most are aimed at professionals, i.e. suggesting networking skills, learning new software, or improving public speaking (Don’t apply to my basic job)

(It’d be an understandable request if I were actually skilled/senior but I work in an entry level role - equivalent to stacking shelves but I just happen to work in an office so I’m expected to go along with this corporate bs.)

What do you actually do?

Can you put something like "increase accuracy" or "respond to queries in max 15 mins" or "reduce stationery spend by 10%"

That kind of thing?

Is there any training course's that you are interested in ? Even if it does not seem directly related to your job like first aid training, or excel / word advancement program .
I decided to do a Open Uni course last year it wasn't directly related to my job , more my managers but it helpped me see the challenges and in one or two cases i could suggest a way they could deal with a issue.

Ha! I put 'work more from home' under the 'green initiative'

Connect more effectively with team members?
Communicate more effectively with others in the organisation?

Any old guff will do Grin

Have a think. Where do you want to be in 3-5 years time?

What is stopping you being there now?

Development goals aren't performance targets like JaJa's examples.

You need things like:

  • Improve Microsoft Excel skills
  • Become competent in payroll handling
  • Become able to facilitate training days
or whatever.

So what skills have the people on the next level up got that you haven't?

Cruddles · 21/07/2020 18:43

Process improvements. If you can reduce time or cost of something you regularly do then this shows initiative and understanding of your role, and you're making it better.

What feedback have you received from your manager? From colleagues?

What would you like to be able to do for the next step in your career? How are your communication skills etc

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 21/07/2020 18:54

Are there any other roles in the organisation (or elsewhere) that you would like to move into in the future? If so suggest development goals that will push you in that direction. And any skills development that will make your current job easier more productive &/or more efficient.

avidteadrinker · 21/07/2020 19:05

As well as thinking what you want to achieve in 3-5 years time, I would recommend researching your company’s goals or values and align your goals with them, it will show you understand your role in trying to make them happen.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 21/07/2020 19:41

I'd go for something that involves CPD or learning new skills which might help you apply for next level roles.

TeenPlusTwenties · 21/07/2020 19:48

What does the 'office' do?

Could you

  • act as a junior for a marketing team?
  • learn how to do the social media activity (so you could cover holidays)
  • learn more about the product to act as first line customer service
etc

If it was stacking shelves in supermarket I'd expect things like

  • get till experience
  • shadow the department leader
  • learn the supervisors role
