Massive cock up at work. What do I do.

It's my first day back at work, I've been off on maternity leave for a year. I'm in the office on my own today, and I logged in on my old computer/desk. I had to quickly scan something to send off, which is a function not available on my computer. I had to use a colleagues empty desk to do this, I used their computer/desk for no more than 3 minutes. After this I read an email from my manager, saying no hot desking is to take place due to covid and telling me to work on a different desk in the corner of the room to be as far away from colleagues desk as possible.

Colleague isn't in today, but now her computer says my name when you go to log in so it's obvious I've used it. My old computer says the same. The only desk that I haven't touched, and doesn't say I've used it is the one desk I was supposed to use.

So what do I do? I don't want to get in trouble, and I know colleague is very worried about me coming back to work due to covid. I have used sterilising wipes on everything I touched on their desk. But do I now move to the desk I was supposed to be at, away from hers? Or do I leave that computer untouched so that when she comes back I can leave a note explaining I used both the other computers and to go on that desk if she wants to sit somewhere I haven't touched.

I'm freaking out a little, I was so nervous about coming back and now I feel like I've really messed up.

Ah OP, I remember going back after maternity leave, that was hard enough without all of these changes having happened. I fretted about stuff that usually wouldn't register. I honestly wouldn't worry, give it a wipe down or whatever the procedure is, and if she wants when she is next in she can give it the once over too.

chaoticisatroll55 · 21/07/2020 16:36

Not my idea of a massive cock up at work but hey ho each to their own !

MrsFogi · 21/07/2020 16:40

Seriously this is not a massive cock up. Email manager. Wipe down keyboards/desks you have touched. Job done.
If it helps - first day I went back after mat leave I spilled water all over my computer and shorted out the electricity on the entire floor of my offices Grin.

Fanthorpe · 21/07/2020 16:41

On your first day back after maternity I would have hoped your manager would have popped in and got you back up to speed before you got down to work. I’d certainly never put someone in your position after such a significant break. You’re upset with yourself for something that isn’t your fault.

StealthPolarBear · 21/07/2020 16:44

Agree this is not a cock up. Do what you can to remedy it - clean keyboards, mice, scanner etc and email both but do not apologise. As for the login, I think you need to click "login as other user" or similar but I really wouldn't bother.

PuppyMonkey · 21/07/2020 16:46

(Can’t you do Switch User and log back in as colleague?)

SockYarn · 21/07/2020 16:58

This is not a "massive cock up".

Bluesheep8 · 21/07/2020 17:03

How were you supposed to know without logging on to a computer? If anything, they’ve cocked up by not telling you first

This. Why didn't someone just do it the old fashioned way and leave you a note?

StatementKnickers · 21/07/2020 17:06

This is not a massive cock-up! I was expecting something huge! there was a brilliant thread on here once with people confessing to mistakes that cost their employers thousands, accidentally sharing confidential info etc.

Anyway. If you go back to your colleague's PC (fuck it, you've already contaminated it, right?) there should be an option to remove your profile from the login screen. You might need to right-cick or try ctrl-alt-del to get to it. Failing that, you can do something like "change user", choose her profile, and just get the password wrong. I think that will still make her show up as the last one to use the PC.

labyrinthloafer · 21/07/2020 17:10

Just be honest, tell them - but you couldn't have known so dont be apologetic!

mrpumblechook · 21/07/2020 17:12

Just clean everything and email them to let them know. They can always clean everything again if they want to make sure . It will be fine.

RaisinGhost · 21/07/2020 17:24

OP this is not a massive cock up. I'd hardly even call it a minor error. Same as pp I'm a nurse and we share computers all day long, we don't have one each so there is no option not to.

Paperthin · 21/07/2020 17:30

Please don’t worry OP. Not a big deal. You realised your error once you were aware - everyone makes mistakes and it’s day one back at work. Just clean the keyboards and desk - job done . I would be more pissed off that, after a year, your manager wasn’t there to meet you and you’ve spent the day on your own ! Tomorrow is another day - don’t give it any more headspace.

hayfeverhellish · 21/07/2020 17:30

I'm in an office in a hospital. Yes, hot desking is discouraged but we all need to sometimes. You just need to clinell wipe everything (we do this at the end of the day anyway!) and power down all the computers (I'm pretty sure that cancels your name?) and forget about it!

foodiefil · 21/07/2020 17:31

This isn't a massive cock up. Are there wipes available to clean the desks? Is there a cleaner working?

It's a non-issue. Don't worry. You saw the email after you'd used the dek - what cleaning procedures are in place? Can you do anything? End of.

Atadaddicted · 21/07/2020 17:34

Leave the key board
Explain the situation
Offer to come in to cover colleagues work for next two days to allow for decontamination

Although really - strikes me as mountain molehill situation

captainprincess · 21/07/2020 17:35

Sorry if this has been answered but I use a laptop (WFH) I'm the only one who uses the laptop and it's windows 10 and I have to log in every time, it never remembers me!
Though like others have said, wipe it down and move on. I've been working from home for 1 week, before that I was in the office everyday, and we shared computers and just wiped everything down. I'm also NHS admin.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 21/07/2020 17:36

Put your hands up. Tell your manager you didn't see the memo until you had already used the work station. Offer to wipe clean. Job done. It's not a cock up really, don't let it worry you.

junebug87 · 21/07/2020 17:43

It's hardly a massive problem! Just wipe it down and explain that you saw the email after using! It's your first day back, don't be so hard on yourself.

saraclara · 21/07/2020 17:45

I wouldn't bother emailing the manager. It's their day off ffs. And what would he do? He'd wonder why on earth you'd bothered him.

Just leave the apologetic but breezy note that a pp suggested, for the computer's usual user.
Dear Colleague I logged on to this pc to scan something and only got the message about not hot-desking a moment ago. I've now thoroughly cleaned all surfaces. Sorry about that. Really looking forward to being back in the office and seeing you all soon, Best wishes OP

whereorwhere · 21/07/2020 17:47

That's not a massive cock up it's a tiny one. I would text the manager not because it's a big deal but because it will make you feel better when he tells you it's not

Dutchesss · 21/07/2020 17:48

Wipe it down. Presumably you will all touch the same door handle to get in and this is no big deal. The chances of spreading Covid from healthy people touching the same surface are practically zero.

Zezet · 21/07/2020 17:54

I am a manager, and I am super strict about corona rules, but this kind of genuine mistake would not faze me in the slightest. I would be surprised to be texted about it on my day off but wouldn't mind if that made the person feel less worried about it for sure.

lifesalongsong · 21/07/2020 17:55

The world's goin mad Grin

This isn't even a major ooops moment, I'd be questioning whether I was working in a normal environment if the culture had me so worried about this.

How does it merit anything more than an apologetic email and maybe a warning post it note on the screen for the next person to use the computer?

Office life has been carrying on during the pandemic, the risk here has got ti be almost immeasurable surely.

Worzle23 · 21/07/2020 18:04

Don’t worry it’s your first day back from mat leave these things happen. Tell your manager immediately and explain you Are sorry and sterilised everything when you realised. Then there’s no harm caused. They will understand. They will only be cross if they find out you covered it upz
