UK breaks are so expensive!

So we've sacked off the 2 weeks in Turkey and I've been looking for something here but the prices for self catering are ££££

Even camping is £££. Thought a cottage or lodge with a hot tub would be an idea but most are sold out or £1500 + for a week

Am I missing any gems to search? Ideally Yorkshire or just below - travelling from Newcastle for a week between now and mid August

I've trawled Hoseasons, Airbnb

Staying in this country is soo expensive.... such a rip off. Don’t holiday owners realise that their long time dead granny’s furniture and bedding is not justifiable for £1500 a week!

Regular user of holiday cottages in this country and have never experienced anything other than quality furnishings and decor.

As for expensive, if you're comparing to a foreign holiday where cost of living isn't comparable to UK, of course it will be cheaper.

There's 6 of us. We have a week in Conwy booked for a 3 bed/6 person and it's come in at £900. Our week half board in Spain last year cost us £3000k and the food was dreadful.

On top of everything, if you're looking for a last minute holiday after an unprecedented international pandemic when foreign travel is dubious at best and people are choosing to holiday at home - it's going to be hard to find something and it's going to be expensive because the cheaper stuff has been snapped up (mainly by people like us who booked last year - UK holiday cottages are incredibly popular).

We were meant to be in Sitges this week, for two adults and one child it was £1,800 for a catered villa with pool and house keeper, and our car hire was covered in that total as was travel to the airport etc. So just spends on top

I just don’t see these deals. But I have 3 older kids (2 of whom will be adult prices on the plane) and I’d need 3 beds in the villa. Most places, just the villa would be £1800 for a week in peak summer season and probably a similar price for travel on top. The only time it’s been significantly cheaper has been in countries like Turkey - but their human rights record puts me off.

Tralee Bay in Argyle. We used to go here every year growing up, to a caravan but its all posh now. The area is awesome and the beach is beautiful. Short distance to Oban.
My brother and his family have continued the tradition of going every year and tell me its still a wonderful place.

I have found the UK to always be cheaper , have booked a six bed cottage for our family of 9 for £1350 7 nights in August. We could not go abroad for anywhere near that price.

Mirrorxx · 26/07/2020 17:02

I have just had to cancel a trip to sitges due the the foreign office announcement. For the cost of that holiday I have booked 2 nights in a hotel in the Cotswold. Going abroad always seems much better value

Callardandbowser · 26/07/2020 17:03

I’ve booked an air bnb for me and DD for a week £80 per night on Isle of Wight. Not too pricey for a beach holiday.

TheABC · 26/07/2020 17:04

Prices ARE high this year. But then, do you really want to book two weeks abroad and risk quarantine like the Spanish tourists are now doing?

I usually holiday in the UK and the trick is flexibility; either on dates, area or accomodation. North Cornwall in August will be ££££, but you can find deals further up the coast in Wales, if you look. For campsites, look at Cool Camping and play with dates. For caravans, look at caravans 4hire and holidayhomes direct. Most cottage owners are signed up to one of the big aggregate sites, but check out the tourist boards for farm stays, pubs and bnbs.

Which are the beaches in Wales to look out for? I like wide, open, sandy beaches with rugged cliffs.

I've just got back from a lovely holiday in Devon, it probably cost the same as a similar break abroad and I enjoyed it as much or maybe more (it made a nice change from our usual ho!idays). We stayed in a lovely hotel and had a sea view balcony. Breakfast and dinner at the hotel were fab and there was lots to do during the day. I love to stand up paddle board and I preferred it this time to last November in Mauritius.
We were due to go on a cruise with our grown up DC but obviously cancelled that and booked our Devon break instead. While I was away I worked out I could have 7 of these breaks for the price of the one cruise. That certainly got me thinking.

Friend booked a static by the sea 7 weeks ago. £400. Now Charing £1200.

Supply and demand I'm afraid. Expect it to be the same for at least the next two years.

Buy a tent and book campsites well ahead for next year as so many people are doing that now

Carolwithane · 26/07/2020 17:56

I don't know if anyone else has already suggested it but we've booked a few times via Sun holidays club 950 . The codes are available online and you can upgrade to a larger/nicer caravan.

We've been to Scarborough and Morecambe, both times been absolutely fine. You don't have to use the facilities on site if you don't want to

Primrose Valley near Scarborough is ideal for beach days at Filey and days out to Flamingo Land or York

UK breaks are so expensive!

@MaybeDoctor, I love the Gower Peninsula for long weekends and the Pembrokeshire coastline in general when time permits and you need soul-restoring beauty.

The rough guide has a good summary here:

This year will be expensive as demand will be phenomenal, particularly for last minute bookings.

But given how much property costs in the UK it’s hardly surprising that holiday cottages are also expensive!

How could a UK holiday be cheaper than somewhere with lower/no minimum wage, cheaper property costs, cheaper food, less duty on drinks, etc?

MaybeDoctor · 27/07/2020 21:08

@TheABC

Thanks, lots of beautiful places there to look at!

whenwillthemadnessend · 28/07/2020 08:38

My cancelled holiday in May would have cost 2300 in Croatia and that's doesn't include food costs

In uk Isle of Wight £800 ferry £150
Supermarket spend. Same as weekly shop at home and a few nice meals out plus ice creams coffees etc

Devon £750. No ferry Food as before. So Britain is definitely cheaper.

Yearly pass to English heritage or Nat trust . So no entry costs to castles etc to amuse kids if weather poor.

I love a British holiday. We have one or sometimes 2 every year We go abroad every two years usually.
