Fraudulent card use - inform the police??

Late last night I got an email thanking me for my latest Moonpig order - which obviously I hadn't made. When I checked I saw that someone had ordered £122 of chocolate (!). Swiftly after that they attempted to order another £124 of stuff but luckily my bank raised it as a security concern and I managed to stop it. Spoke to bank, card cancelled immediately and Moonpig notified. They were absolutely amazing and within hours I had an apologetic email and a refund.

I have the name and address of the person who made the fraudulent order because obviously delivery details were stored on Moonpig - is it worth contacting the police? Or would they not be interested because the matter is resolved?

I don't think the police will be interested in this but try if you like. Have a ton of fresh manure delivered to their house. Not really. Do you know them and how did they get your card details,

Basecamp65 · 20/07/2020 15:12

Your bank or moonpig will take action if they think it necessary - they will have investigated the other person and made a decision.

Call the Police if you want but you have had your money back - i would leave it to the people who manage these things daily.

Unless you know them personally - then i would feel different i think

Would the Moonpig delivery address be that of the person who ordered? Anytime I've used Moonpig or similar it's in order to send a card to someone else.

I'm not sure that the police would do anything, financial fraud is so prevalent at the moment that they would be swamped if they investigated every minor incident.

Hi OP. I would recommend reporting this to the police (particularly as there is a named person involved) and also to Action Fraud. Action Fraud deal with scams, fraud and internet-related financial crimes. You can report crimes online with them.
I'm sorry you experienced this, but glad Moonpig and your bank have been helpful.

Gentl3manJack · 20/07/2020 15:19

Yes, I thought it was too trivial to bother them with really.

No, no idea who they are. Moonpig said several attempts had been made to access my account using details that they had got elsewhere. I hardly ever store my card details online so no clue where they've come from!

As I said, my card was cancelled last night so hopefully this will be an end to it.

I'd just contact your bank and make sure that they cannot make any more orders. And check that they haven't attempted to either!

Yes, report it. I did this when a neighbour stole my card and made two purchases of alcohol from a local shop. Unfortunately the CCTV tape in the shop had been wiped before they could view it, so they couldn't do anything. But I'm not sorry I did it. (I know it was my neighbour, as she was the only person who had been in the house apart from me and my DH)
