Escapist novels where (importantly) nothing bad happens!

I just want to escape to somewhere else and get lost in fluffiness with no peril whatsoever. Have you ever read something that meets this criteria and is also good? I need cheering up!

Trisha Ashley novels are my go-to comfort reads.
The Twelve Days of Christmas is my favourite, it's just so cosy!
And for historical romance, the Eloisa James Duchess in Love novels. Definitely 'guilty pleasure' reads!

Vinopoly · 21/07/2020 20:22

I like cosy and I like historical! Fancy Nancy Mitford too!

Another vote for Bill Bryson.

I would add Anne Tyler.

Ormally · 21/07/2020 21:47

Also The Keeper of Lost Things, although there is some mild distress in it in a couple of parts. Possibly The Lady and the Unicorn also.

Vaughan32 · 21/07/2020 22:54

John Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men and The Red Pony. Not.
We have OMaM as a compulsory text on the Y7 reading list this summer, just to put a dampener on the children's holiday happiness.

Geraniumblue · 21/07/2020 22:57

I like Anne Tyler’s novels, but I don’t find them escapist, more wistful and sometimes a bit sad.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/07/2020 22:59

I don't think, 'Of Mice and Men' is at all appropriate for Yr 7.

Yes to 'Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day'
Mrs Harris goes to Paris - a lovely story about a cleaner who sets her heart on a designer dress

I second Barbara Pym. Beautiful writing and absolutely nothing bad happens. Also Miss Bunckle's Book and sequel by DE Stevenson. Pure delight. I also like books that are safe to enter into!!

Mary Douglas. Romantic adventure.

midsomermurderess did you mean Mary Stewart? I can't find an author called Mary Douglas. I was going to recommend Mary Stewart.

There's a Canadian website called FadedPage which makes available free digitised versions of books that are out of copyright in Canada. You are asked not to download books if they're not out of copyright where you are. There are some Angela Thirkell there, and all the Miss Silver books by Patricia Wentworth, which are fairly gentle reading, even though they are crime/detective fiction, plus lots of other classic and popular titles.

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/07/2020 23:39

Another vote for Georgette Heyer's Regency romances and anything by Bill Bryson.

ScouseQueen · 21/07/2020 23:45

Was going to recommend Enchanted April but I see you've read it!
Does it have to be fiction? I love Andrew Collins's memoir Where Did It All Go Right about his normal 70s childhood.

birdling · 22/07/2020 08:50

The Swiss Family Robinson is surprisingly gentle.

Whenwillow · 22/07/2020 08:52

I definitely need this thread. Thank you.
I second 'Miss Read' they are cosy and warm-hearted.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/07/2020 09:07

I second the Miss Silver crime books. She solves crimes whilst wearing comfortable shoes and doing a lot of knitting.

slipperyeel · 22/07/2020 09:08

Miss Pettigrew lives for a day

Try Persephone books, quite a few would fit the bill

MoonBabysMagicalKalimba · 29/07/2020 14:14

Bit late to the party, but The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets by Eva Rice is one of my favourites. I've reread it dozens of times and it's always one I turn to when I'm feeling a bit low and want a comforting read.

Thanks, I've just ordered this @MoonBabysMagicalKalimba
