New bathroom what would/wouldn't you include?

DH & I are trying to come up with ideas for when we get the bathroom done. It's not huge 6' x 6' but we can fit in walk in shower, toilet and sink unit with drawers underneath. Plus mirrored cabinet above.
We would like under floor heating and a large heated towel rail.
If you've had a new bathroom fitted in the last few years is there anything you suggest we should consider, or anything to avoid?
We'll speak to a few companies to see what they suggest design wise but I'd like to go in with an idea of what works/doesn't work.
Thanks in advance.

Large shower cubicle, am happy to do without a bath to get one in.

bestbefore · 19/07/2020 20:49

Add a light to the mirror - like this www.hib.co.uk/products/mirrors/air-40/#videocontent - has a heated pad so it doesn't steam up and is lovely for make up. We have one with a cabinet behind

I’ve not long had my 6x6 bathroom redone. Spent ages planning it so it’s perfect for us. I got rid of the bath, and have had a large shower cubicle with built in seat over the bulkhead of the stairs (where the slopey end of the bath used to sit), doors that fold completely flat back against the walls, so, when the shower isn’t in use, there’s not a huge glass cubicle taking up the space. It’s made the room feel so much bigger. I also went for a really small basin as all we do is wash hands and clean teeth, so don’t need a big cumbersome thing. Plenty of built in storage for spare toiletries and towels, towel radiator. I wasn’t bothered about any other form of heating as it gets red hot in there anywhere when the shower is on. Love my new bathroom. Well, I’ll love it even more when the decorating is finished (damn lockdown meant I only got one coat of paint done!).

This was when it was very first fitted, but you can see how the fold away doors leave loads more elbow space when you’re at the sink. All the woodwork is now painted white as well.

And with the doors opened out as a shower cubicle.

Wall hung toilet & sink cabinet. Makes the room look bigger & easier to clean the floor.

We got our small bathroom redone a year ago and a few things we learned:
Under sink storage doesn’t actually give you much. We ended up having a smaller sized floating sink and a slim loo and have a massive cabinet from IKEA with a mirror on the opposite wall for everything. Loads more room and also won’t be affected by water leaking from anywhere. I was worried about this as friends that have had cabinets across from loo to sink to bath have had some problems with water getting down the back
We also haven’t got a tap on the bath - the overflow doubles as a tap and we have an electric control the other side (easy to replace battery etc but haven’t needed to yet) makes for much easier cleaning and looks less busy.
We got a folding shower door as when opened it took up most of the bathroom and hit the actual bathroom door

I'd have a short but wide freestanding bath with shower over and shower curtain. And definitely a bidet.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 19/07/2020 21:12

I adore our underfloor heating, just came on to suggest it but see you already have included it. I'd love a heated mirror so it doesn't all steam up too

AriettyHomily · 19/07/2020 21:19

Double sinks,ditch the bath

Solasum · 19/07/2020 21:28

Niches in the shower are super useful.

Don’t let the plumber do the tiling, get a proper tiler

LaceyBetty · 19/07/2020 21:34

They're expensive, but a lighted, heated, mirrored cabinet over the sink is a game changer for mornings.

Itwasntme1 · 19/07/2020 21:35

Don’t get waterfall taps. Mine were expensive, but they still splutter everywhere and soak the floor

Aquamarine1029 · 19/07/2020 21:38

Dimmable lighting and built in night lights.

sooveritalready · 19/07/2020 21:45

Built in night lights are a game changer, deffo get those.

Solasum · 19/07/2020 22:05

Don’t be tempted by a small sink. I originally got a corner sink as I didn’t want to overwhelm the space, and it was just too small, so then had to buy another one Proving my mum right

We got a very neat sink which doesn’t go over the integrated cabinet. The shelves were possible because we chose a small cistern. Our tiler was very demanding of himself and us! We bought the tiles, he made us promise to buy boxes with the exact same number on which meant they were all the same batch otherwise there are variations in the colour. We have fully tiled walls/floor and spots in the ceiling.

Not sure why the 2nd photo didn’t load.

We bought a beautiful chrome towel rail when we had our showerroom re done last year. It already has rust on it as we didn't have it on all the time and put wet towels on it. I've googled it and this is a common problem and we should have had it switched on more to avoid rust. If I had my time again I'd have gone for a stainless steel one which may still have rusted but the rust would have rubbed off.

MitziK · 19/07/2020 22:49

If money was no object?

Heated floor. Made of stone, not plastic or slate.

Dimmable lights.

Japanese toilet.

Huge shower with multiple showerheads (rainfall and handheld), seating area and temperature controlled soaking tub. Extra space would mean a sauna as per Scandinavian homes.

An alcove in the shower area. Large, three shelves to allow for random purchases of huge bottles of posh products.

Full length mirror with daylight LEDs and a large superhigh magnifying one with a shelf for contacts/makeup/etc.

Wall hung sink with mixer tap rather than separate taps.

Shelving for towels.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 20/07/2020 11:03

I really should have put in a heated towel rail not just a radiator, always have semi damp towels.
Oh and I bought this which I love:

Thank you all so much for the replies and suggestions. Lots of great possibilities to consider.
Thanks for sharing photos too. Both are lovely!
Beem browsing through a bathroom catalogue today and honestly had no idea there was so much choice. It might take a while to decide.

I’d also recommend filling holes around pipes with wire wool. Just in case any mousy visitors ever decide to head your way. Much easier to do when installing than after
