How to cool his room with spending £££

DS’ bedroom is ridiculously hot. He’s in the roof. We live in a tiny 2 bed cottage so have no choice. He’s really struggling to settle at the moment as it is and the heat heat is compounding the problem. DH has just been made redundant so we really can’t afford hundreds on a proper air conditioning unit. The two hour battles at bedtime in a 30 degree room are causing a lot of friction. We keep the blinds shut in the day, having the window open makes no difference, we run a decent fan a couple of hours before bedtime. All I can find within budget are small air coolers that you full with water/ice. Do these really work?

Could you take out a lot of the soft furnishings - rugs, soft toys etc. Less stuff cools a room down

They are good enough for one room so I would definitely get one of those. We use one in the lounge and both bedrooms during summer and they do help a lot as long as the doors are closed.

Ceiling fan, ours cost £70 from b&q.. or a small ac unit that costs £200?

You can put a tray of ice in front of the fan - obviously being careful not to be near electrics.
Have you tried the gel chill pillows they can be effective

I saw some really good small fans in Home sense today. Reasonable price. Could you not leave the fan on for a few hours until he falls asleep? Do you have carpets or flooring?
