4 hours in Belfast?

HairyMaclary · 18/07/2020 17:25

We have 4 hours in Belfast next Friday, we’ll be flying in to the airport and hiring a car and then will have 4 hours before we need to start the drive to where we are staying. What can we see or do in that time, any good suggestion? We’d need to eat during this time too.

Titanic museum if open - it's excellent and takes a couple of hours.

Sunnysidegold · 18/07/2020 18:42

I'd second titianic. You can also do a taxi tour of the wall murals for a bit of more recent history.

BernardoTeashop · 18/07/2020 21:38

Titanic museum is excellent. Would definitely recommend it

worriedEmployee · 18/07/2020 21:45

You could do the Giant's Causeway in that time.

Or hike up Cave Hill and then go for something to eat in Belfast Castle (if open)

Maybe some info as to what you like etc

Mummyshark2018 · 18/07/2020 22:28

Prob not enough time to do giants causeway so I'd say titanic museum then a meal in cathedral quarter or vice versa!

Mummyshark2018 · 18/07/2020 22:29

If you have small kids then W5 is also very good!

Cocolapew · 18/07/2020 22:31

Titanic here too.

Cocolapew · 18/07/2020 22:32

Oops meant to say you could go into the Titanic Hotel for something to eat, it's lovely.

buckeejit · 18/07/2020 22:35

Where are you driving to? Probably other options to stop at on your rote

Titanic is good, as is W5. Depends how keen you are on potential crowds. You could go almost anywhere & back in Ni in 4 hours.

The museum & botanic gardens beside is good too, (not sure if botanical house is open)

What do you like?

Are you flying into George Best Belfast City Airport (it's in Belfast) or Belfast international airport (it's not in Belfast.)

Belfast- CS Lewis square, hire bikes, do round the BMX track at Victoria park.

Not Belfast- you're little over an hour in the car from giant's causeway so you may as well. Mini maegden cheese toasties and mallow topped hot chocs are very popular.

BelfastSmile · 18/07/2020 22:43

Titanic museum definitely (check it's open though) or W5 with kids. SS Nomadic is also interesting.

Bear in mind that some stuff here is still closed, so check in advance.

The Ulster Museum/Botanic Gardens/Queens University area is nice for a wander if the weather is good.

Depends where you're heading on to as well.

brieandcrackers · 18/07/2020 22:43

Another vote for the Titanic museum here! If you were a fan of Game of Thrones, the studios where it was filmed is a short walk down the road - you can have a peek at the remnants of the King's Landing set Smile

Botanic gardens and the cathedral both lovely too!

noodledoodler · 18/07/2020 22:58

I was up at Belfast Castle today, the grounds were open but not the building. We headed up to Hazelbank Park which was open and had a lovely walk (the tide was fully out unusually so got to walk out a bit on the beachy section). From Hazelbank we could see three large cruise ships docked and there were plenty of tourists about the Castle earlier so there is life about Belfast - as previous posters say, it is still a bit hit and miss so check online before committing to plans. The Belfast Bus Tour is a good option if you are looking for an overall taster of the city, its hop on hop off and you might be able to squeeze a quick visit to HMS Belfast in with the time you have, again, check first. Lots of great places to eat. Happy for you to PM me OP if you wish, Belfast is a great place to visit, welcome Smile

GoldenOmber · 18/07/2020 22:59

Everyone else already said Titanic museum, so I'll say the tour bus that takes you round the city. Loops back through the city centre so you don't even need to do a whole circuit.

scratchbass · 18/07/2020 23:09

Depends on what airport you are flying into (there are two) and where you are travelling to (even a direction from Belfast would be useful)?

lilmishap · 18/07/2020 23:52

Another for Titanic/Nomadic and be sure to do the driven tour wooden bus/wagon thing that sits outside (if it's there) it takes you round the docks and isn't just about Titanic. Which you might appreciate after the museum!

implantsandaDyson · 19/07/2020 07:32

Titanic Museum/Ulster Museum/W5 are all still closed. There's a partial reopening over the next few weeks but not by Friday. As other posters have said it really depends what airport you're flying into and where you're heading onto after your 4 hours and as always the weather Grin.

I'd float about the town, maybe head up to CS Lewis Square, Belfast Castle, Botanic Gardens, maybe try somewhere like Made in Belfast, Coppi for food, check if you need to advance book. I think its tight for time to head up the North coast and be back to start a drive somewhere else within 4 hours especially if you've another long drive ahead of you?

HairyMaclary · 19/07/2020 08:35

Shame about the titanic museum, I liked the sound of that. We’re flying into Belfast international and heading to Coleraine afterwards so will be doing giant’s causeway etc then.
Would like to see the city really, mural tour sounds interesting but not a taxi one if we have our own car. Will investigate some of the places in implantsandaDyson’s post too. Thanks all

Just so you're aware, the International airport is kind of on the way from Belfast to Coleraine, so you'll be doubling back on yourself if you go to Belfast first. Depending on how long you're staying, you might be better to take the scenic route to the north coast and then take a full day in Belfast at some point (possibly in another week, when things reopen more).
