How to solve this sleeping problem

DH suffers badly from hayfever, and closes all the windows at night.

I would much rather have the windows open, and sleep much, much better with a bit of fresh air. I wake up a few times in the night anyway, but have recently started waking up with hot flushes (I’m 49, hardly surprising) which keep me awake, and I have to open the window to cool down and get back to sleep. This is true whatever I am wearing in bed, and with the thinnest cover.

DH has got one of those big Dyson air purifier fans, but it can’t keep up with pollen coming in if the window is open. (It is brilliant at controlling background levels if the window is closed though.)

We don’t have a spare room, and the living room has become our home office.

How finer solve this? It round be really useful if we could both sleep at night!

Apart from the waking up at night, I have no other menopause symptoms. I react terrible to large doses of hormones, particularly synthetic ones - I never found a pill that don’t make me nauseous, and I had hyperemisis in both pregnancies, so I’d rather not go on HRT, even if I could get to the GP.

Why don’t you aim the fan right at yourself rather than cooling the whole room and keep the window closed. I had to do this whilst pregnant as I have bad hay fever. He will just have to sleep in thin clothing and be a bit warm.

The fan is not really a cooling fan, it mainly filters the air. It’s meant to cool, but not noticeably. It’s floor standing and rotates around, you can’t really aim it at anywhere in particular.

I think you need to find a way to cool down that doesn't involve opening the window - like no cover and a fan pointing at you? Wetting yourself down with a damp flannel is good to cool you down.

I don't think it's fair to open the window when your dh has hayfever.

It doesn’t have a stationary setting like the hot cold fans do with a remote control for power then? I’d suggest by a hot cold fan that way you can also use it as a heater in winter if needed.

Anti histamine before bed? I take one at 5am most mornings after a wee or can't get back to sleep for drippy /itchy nose and eyes!

Can't you get a fan just pointing at you?

Get an air conditioner and sleep with the window shut.

I have hay fever, it's awful when something really sets it off. Can't stop sneezing and feel like I want to scratch my own eyes out because they're so itchy.
