The use of 'Gosh'...in real life?

JinglingHellsBells · 18/07/2020 15:13

I've recently seen posters using this on MN yet in real life I don't know anyone using it in speech.

The only person I know who uses it a lot is my Mum's neighbour, in her late 80s, and even as a child I thought it was quite antiquated and '1950s'.

I simply don't know anyone who says that word now.

(and I'm solidly middle class with educated middle class friends, if that makes any difference.)

I like them all! I swear quite a lot but try not to at work.

People used to say Jiminy cricket a lot I seem to remember?

pepsicola5 · 18/07/2020 15:25

I'm in my late 20s and always use gosh and goodness me.

Lipz · 18/07/2020 15:26

I say gosh, I replaced it from Fuck, I prefer Fuck, but people seem to prefer gosh. Might go back to fuck.

daisypond · 18/07/2020 15:26

I say it.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 18/07/2020 15:28

I’m in my 40’s and use it along with ‘Oh my word’ and ‘goodness’
In my natural state with dh and friends, I’m more inclined to say shit and oh for fucks sake.

TimelyManor · 18/07/2020 15:29

Oh my gosh sounds to me like they want to say oh my God but are trying to be polite. It usually sounds quite false, although I haven't heard it very often.

LittleMissBrainy · 18/07/2020 15:29

I say it all the time, gosh, goodness and geez. I write it to, on here and in messages.

My 4 & 3 year old have picked up saying 'oh my God' from nursery and I hate it!! I'm trying to get them not to say it but I feel I'm fighting a losing battle as everyone else seems to say it. No idea why though as it's a horrible phrase.

itssquidstella · 18/07/2020 15:30

I say it. I'm a teacher (secondary) but I say it in non-work contexts too; I also swear like a trooper.

IndecentFeminist · 18/07/2020 15:30

I say it a lot.
I also say "oh my goodness", "goodness me", "oopsa daisy", "for goodness' sake" (if really riled)

Blimey O'Riley is another

I used them pre kids too

Drivingdownthe101 · 18/07/2020 15:31

I use it. And ‘cross’. Mid 30’s, lower middle class I’d say. My friends do laugh at me for gosh though. Cross has come about from telling my children off... ‘I’m so cross with your behaviour’.

willitbetonight · 18/07/2020 15:31

I use it all the time.

Drivingdownthe101 · 18/07/2020 15:31

I also say ‘fuck’ a lot.

TheoneandObi · 18/07/2020 15:31

I say it! I think I write it too. I ought to use it more often. I'm getting a bit too sweary in my old age and ought to wright that in!

EatShitBoswell · 18/07/2020 15:31

I use gosh too. And goodness and my giddy aunt. I makes me smile when I think about it though and I love it when my son says 'oh goody aunt' 😄.
I'm early thirties and as a child was terrified to say the word 'god' in any context as I'm from a religious family and was told I'd go to hell, really terrified. I'm thankfully not anymore but 'gosh' has stuck with me!

labyrinthloafer · 18/07/2020 15:31

@TimelyManor

Gosh is absolutely a replacement for God - they are called minced oaths according to Dr Google (just looked).
LizzieVereker · 18/07/2020 15:33

I use it a lot. But I’m also really sweary.

JinglingHellsBells · 18/07/2020 15:33

Interesting!
I'd be more likely to say 'Blimey'.

I used 'goodness' in some creative writing recently and my lecturer said it was too old fashioned. I feel gosh is even more dated.

I don't hate the word, it's just not common parlance now (except on MN it seems!)

Don’t use gosh - like a PP; to me it sounds too close to “god” and therefore either sounds really faux prissy, or it actually just sounds like “oh my god” which I hate.

I use jings a lot, also “oh my word”, “oh my life”.

Oh my giddy aunt is said a lot too but it reserved more for expressing despair. (Usually at my DC or when someone at work has dictated something ridiculous.)

ChristmasCarcass · 18/07/2020 15:38

Started using it when DS2 started shouting “oh sheet!” when anything fell over. Also replaced “fucking hell” with “my goodness”.

liquoricecravings · 18/07/2020 15:40

I say gosh and goodness in all contexts. I don't blaspheme. I'm early 30s.

TimeWastingButFun · 18/07/2020 15:40

I use gosh and goodness a lot. But not jings - I've never hear that one!

BirthdayCakes · 18/07/2020 15:41

I hate it - my parents, DH and DC ALLLLLLLL use it..

EricLove123 · 18/07/2020 15:43

I only use it sarcastically. 'Gosh how frightening/unusual/interesting'.

TimelyManor · 18/07/2020 15:43

minced oaths

I love that! My aim today is to use it in a sentence, thank you Labyrinth Grin

labyrinthloafer · 18/07/2020 15:45

I have learnt some new ones, might expand my repertoire Grin

This is a very jolly thread!
